Ok, so I'm taking the computer-based GRE at Prometric in Roanoke the day after tomorrow. The computer based test is "learning" which means the first 5 questions are the really crucial ones, as they determine the largest part of your score, which is then "fine-tuned" with the rest of the questions.
Anyone have any other hints for me?

Study your math skills, but the math section is cake. I pride myself on my vocabulary, and so I didn't study any vocab, and thus sucked in that section. And as for the writing part, I didn't practice at all, but I think the whole nursing thing lends itself to critical thinking. I was told regarding this section "pretend like you're PMSing and overanalyze." So uh...good luck with that. Nice thing is you get your score right then and there. You'll do great!
620 Verbal
600 Math.
Still waiting on my analytical, it'll be a few days.
I feel good about it.

I took these not too long ago and would recommend a quick look at the quick study guides. I actually just borrowed a GRE for dummies book from a friend of mine, which I still have if you want to look at it Thayer. It was really helpful for the math sections as I haven't done any math besides calculus and stats for four years now. Just getting accustomed to the terms you haven't used in a long time is really important. The vocabulary section was killer for me, I'm a science/math person so I just went back and looked through some roots/prefix stuff and some of the "terms most often found on the GRE" type stuff. Helped some but overall it was pretty hit or miss, pretty much used some hint strategies from those guides to narrow my options. The writings are pretty easy as they give you pretty specific topics and just avoid straying from exactly what they ask for... those study books give you a good idea of what they are looking for and what not to waste your time on. Oh, and as it was mentioned earlier... spend the most time on the first five questions as they are worth a TON more than the following questions and set the tone for the rest of the section. Hope this might help somebody, good luck.
BTW.. those are really good scores.
I just made sure I got a good nights rest and a good breakfast. I didn't study anything because I figured I probably know the math already and I didnt care at all about the verbal.
In the end my verbal was a disaster (490, what's this you call vocabulary?), but my math section was pretty good (790, it pretty much has to be for engineering) and the writing came out at 5.5 (I didnt know the scale so I had no idea how good it was.)
The math seemed much easier than the SATs (as i remember them), but the vocab seemed to be much more difficult. I'd suggest that you review how to do the basic problems for the math stuff and mostly brush up on the vocabulary.
Oh... and relax and take a deep breath before you click the button to see your scores.

I don't think I would have handled that well. As in, I would laugh out loud in her face and make the situation a whole lot worse.

wow that was terrible. i got a 500 verbal and 690 math. granted, since the beginning questions are important, i spent a lot of time on the third question because it was long, not difficult and i wanted to get it right. that ended up screwing me though because i didnt have time to finish the section. ugh

Back from the dead again
I'm taking a classroom based GRE prep class until early august at which point I'll be taking the actual thing. I went in the first day and we took a diagnostic test, which was pretty much the written version of the test w/o essays. Came back as a 730 math and a 520 verbal. I'm not really surprised by the verbal since I haven't taken an english class in about 2-3 years, but I was disapointed with my math, seeing as the ones I got wrong I simply misread (hooray for taking your time). I'm not to concerned though since im sure my verbal will go a lot higher after a little bit of studying each week for a few months.
Anybody take a GRE subject test? I think they only offer them certain months of the year, but ive gotten nothing but errors and dead links when trying to sign up for it online. I saw an example of the GRE math subject test and was a little taken back. I'm definitely going to have to go revisit some subjects from courses I took fresh/soph year.

is this class like princeton review? i remember them gauranteeing an increase of atleast 100 points throughout the class. turns out the first couple of tests they give you are pretty tough then the last few are easy. seems like you did pretty well if this was the first test

Yeah its Kaplan. I know they give you like 5 exams overall, 2 of which are computer based just to get you used to the format, but we'll see. I'm basically going for the verbal part of the class.
It turns out that the closest one they or PR had was in charlottesville so I have to drive there every tue night but its kinda a nice drive so I don't really mind it.

790/560 :?
I'm actually a little disappointed with this as I got a 800/670 on the last practice test I took. I dunno, I went in there thinking that as a math major i was pretty much required to get a perfect score, so I'm hoping a 790 is good enough as I really don't want to pay $120 just so I can go in there and get an 800. Of course I got the two math sections to =(.
Writing parts seemed easy, although I guess I'll see what I got when they come. I need to do a little looking around to make sure a 790 is enough =-/
