Brake pads... could be technical... but not really

Hey guys,

Just an opinion question here. I'm going to need new brakes for the suby and I'm not sure if I want to go with Hawk HPS, HP+, or just OEMs since I'm not going to track the car.

So... important details
-Car will never be tracked. period.
-Car might be autoxed again. might.
-Last time I autoxed, i had oem pads that did just fine.
-OEM Pads are $72 for the set
-HPS Pads are $156 for the set
-HP+ Pads are $210 for the set
-I'm driving them across the country, and will be commuting with them.
-I'm not putting them on myself (city + no tools), so factor in an extra $150 for labor/machining

I'm probably just going to end up with OEMs..

if its just seeing street driving, go with the cheapo autozone/advance auto pads.

Yea I'm with maeng, just get the OEM pads for regular street driving. HPS's would probably do the job too and be a little better for autox's, but aren't really necessary. I would say definitely no to the HP+'s, they squeek and dust too much if your not going to be tracking it.

Bendix pads at AdAuto would be fine and are OEM. Hawk's would suck for daily driving.

BINGO! Do NOT go w/ the cheapest ones (weaver I believe) They suck. Get the OEM equiv's which are Bendix. HP pads blow.

The aftermarket stuff is probably OK, but if you want no suprises the OEM pads are not that much more $$ - they will probably dust less and last longer, for the most part.

I've been really happy with the PFC 'carbon metallic' pads on my truck though.

i'd say cheapest you can find. auto-x'ing isn't that hard on brakes. it's nice to not be squeeling/dusting constantly too in that metro traffic.

maybe, depends. I've seen bendix cheaper that weaver but usually its vice-versa (hell I've seen PFz's cheaper on some cars vs weaver/bendix). I've installed a few sets of the weaver pads for people in the past and they ALL come back complaining of squealing (yes I use anti-squeal). Now I tell everyone prior to buying pads that I don't want to hear one complaint of noise if they bring weaver pads to me, I've never had a person complain about the bendix pads, in fact I've replaced weaver pads more than once for a set of bendix after a few short months.

Cheap and squeal/dust are usually mutually exclusive. YMMV, and OEM FTW for street cars.

With that said, I actually like the HPS pads on my STi a lot, and they helped save me from an accident a few weeks back when a three car/truck happened right in front of me... I could have been the fourth! hock:

Not to stray too far off topic... but you know that brake pads dont shorten your stopping distances, right? You're still tire limited - an OEM brake pad can lock up a slick... although probably only once or twice before it fade to oblivion.

Yeah, fortunately it wasn't hard enough to lose tire traction, but it was enough to throw everyone forward hard in their seat ... although I do still have Hancook winter tires on it :lol:
