bah! i really liked those cars too. i'd buy one just to take it through a parking garage and listen to that sweet engine
when i was looking at mazdaspeed car forums i went across some protege5 stuff....they look like really fun cars. i'd be totally down for one, might have to do a little test-drive-o-rama

Yea the e36 is heavier than that you might expect for the most part, curb weight listed around 3100 lbs I believe. It's a little bit of a pig compared to the e30, but still a real fun car to drive around.
RJ is right about the cooling system needing the new parts, but I think those are the only absolutely critical things to replace. The Rear shock mounts have a tendency to go bad, but you'll hear them start to make noise when the start to go. With the suspension its just regular maintenance stuff: Shocks, bushings, and ball joints wear out and need to be replaced which is normal for any car.
92-93 and maybe 94's have a nice issue where water can flood the ecu compartment, it's easily fixable by drilling a hole in a plastic piece under the cowl, but many a man has lost their ecu that way (me included). I actually think that problem is what caused so many of the rumor that the cars were horrible on the electrical side. The other electrical issues the cars have aren't critical to driving the car.
All in all I think it would be a pretty nice fit for you, especially because you don't have to worry about snow in the ATL so I say rear wheel drive FTW! Oh and I think all the 328's came with a LSD, the earlier 325s didnt even have them as an option until 94 or 95.

well... that's your call of course. But you could spend about 5-6k on the car and another 3k on a Downing ATL supercharger! It's apparently a very well thought out kit and reliable. Now you're smokin! And still under budget.
Of course you could spend less swapping it to an m50, like the one Rex is selling....
well now it's turning into a project, but at least there's plenty of ways to upgrade if the power isn't enough for you.
Or here's one already swapped for $7500, I didn't really read the details... http://www.318ti.org/forum/showthread.php?t=14757

down teh line i definitely wouldn't be opposed to modifying any car i get, i can't help but tinker with stuff. i'll keep the 318ti in mind

Yes, its AWD, and weighs slightly more than 3000lbs. But they're reliable, safe, roomy, and fast. Tons of potential and plenty of parts out there if you want to upgrade.
There are plenty of '02 models on Autotrader for under $10k, with under 100k miles.

They're plenty reliable. Not as bulletproof as a honda, but they do just fine.

+1 for E36
I loved my M3 until the day I sold it. If I wasn't just a bit less fickle than RJ with cars I'd likely still be beating the piss out of mine.

No grown man wants to drive a Neon, Jeff. The SRT-4's have great drivetrains but that's where its positives end.

+1 WRX! Only downside is not great gas mileage and have to use premium fuel. You can't go wrong with an Accord, you liked your last one right?

We get between 24-27 mpg, depending on the conditions. I consider that to be decent, especially considering the AWD + boost...
I've seriously thought about replacing the L and the Saturn with another WRX, because I really like the one we already have. A little utility trailer would round things out nicely too...

yeah i did. that's the whole reason i have it on the last, haha. they are pretty boring cars but they are based on a really nice chassis and respond well to mods.
John/Andy - i do like the WRX alot, actually. i was under the impression they were more expensive. i don't like the milage and weight as much but i'd gladly trade that up for great reliability. it's mostly the wrenching thing - hard to change plugs, clutch, etc
Jeff - i know my criteria are very difficult/impossible to meet for my price range, but that's kind of the point....i might as well list everything i want and then just try to get as close as possible instead of shooting low to begin with

In a WRX? Its not *that* bad, nothing you cant tackle in an apt parking lot.

Its all just nuts and bolts.
Then again, I think "rebuilding my engine" qualifies as apt parking lot work too. YMMV.
