Adult Baseball League

Back in highschool when I used to play legion we used to scrim the types of leagues that you seem to be talking about (18+). IIRC most were actually arround early to mid twenties, but they were definitely skilled.

Having not been around the game in a few years I doubt that I could practice for a month or two and be on par, or even a little worse than what they were. But I wouldn't be surprised if a league containing players that are a little more rusty such as yourself did exist. Northern Virginia has so many different leagues for stuff like that.

Concerning softball, I play IM here, and I played for both the BEA and BLS softball teams the past two summers, and I found that I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. I also distinctly remember seeing a lot more competitive softball leagues around Fairfax. I think it might be a good idea to attend one of the more competitive games and see if its up to your standards. You might be pleasantly surprised.

I went and practiced with some wooden bat league guys tonight. It was ok, their coach/3Bman is a real douche. It seemed like he was trying to discourage me from coming out before I even got there(via email) and the same attitude ensued once i was there. I think he must've started his period since I first got in touch with him or something.

Had another practice last night with the 25+ Aluminum bat league (even thought I'm 23, they said I could get in on some technicality)

They seemed pretty good - a part of the dcmsbl

Did you ever hear from your friend what league he's in Jason?

I played ALOT of baseball growing up. In high school I spent all 4 years on the varsity squad as a catcher/utility infielder. We won a state championship one year and I an all district/region player at both catcher and second base. I'd love to get back into it all.

After college i played a couple of summers of slow pitch church league softball. you will NOT find a more competative league out there for softball. we were practicing 2-3 times a week, and 2-3 games a week. the top teams will pull double plays, you have to run your ass off every play, there is no half assing anything.

Company softball leagues ftw! Sucks I can't play now due to my new position, but hopefully I'll be able to get out there and watch a few games =/

The best part about softball leagues is the shit-talking during the games and the drinks afterwards Wink

Hahaha yeah when I played for BLS a few summers ago my whole team got a lot of shit because they brought their intern, who wasn't even old enough to drink  . People get pretty competitive about that stuff.

you should come out and play then - not sure how many more this team needs - but it looks like I got a spot on it, they invited me back anyway.

I'm way to out of shape to be on a team now... plus my knees are shot from playing catcher for so long... but i wouldnt mind throwing around. I actually thought about trying to coach some little league for a while. hit me up and let me know if they need a utility/catcher that hasnt hit a baseball in 6 years Wink

yeah, its been 6 years for me too, but i was real surprised how fast it comes back. I know there was one team looking for a catcher - but this team is pretty deep at catcher, but infield utility might be of some use. Looks like there is a draft type thing coming up - not sure how that works, I've just been trying to find a team ahead of time. I think if you were going to try to get 3 - 4 people all on the same team, you might have to just start a team - or find a team that was really hurting for players..which means it might be across town or something.

check out www.dcmsbl.com and on the left there is a link for a message board - and you can go to the "looking" section at the top of that page and see the players/teams looking

and also from the main page you can register for the draft

Baseball is definitely a pussy sport when it comes to physical contact. When do you hit someone, like once a year when you charge home plate and the catcher has it?

well no shit, it isn't a game of contact. it's a game of skill...

i was a catcher and i was fairly good at stealing bases... i was only thrown out once in high school. There is more contact and dirty play than you realize. and in little league, with wild pitchers, there is ALOT of contact at home plate with people coming home when they think you lost the ball between your legs or behind you.

heh - yeah, ive definately seen some pretty nasty metal spikes in legs with high slides and such. Then there's always the risk of getting nailed in the back, elbow, ankle, or face with a 9oz weight going 85mph....i'd be willing to bet that single impact hurts more than any single impact in football - assuming it was a clean hit and you didnt twist your ankle or arm up under yourself and break it.

Well that's what Travis was saying so.....

Most of baseball is sitting on your ass or standing and waiting for the ball to come to you. It definitely takes skill, but it's a lazy sport.

Yeah, trying to cover 100 feet to catch a ball, having to react instantly to a ball coming off the bat of someone 90 feet away from you, and sprinting 180 feet around the basepath is definitely lazy .

While I understand what you're trying to say Lee, Travis didn't exactly make the same point as you. Yes, you aren't moving every second, but it's not like any out of shape person can come play. In fact, 9 times out of 10 the only out of shape player on the baseball field is the pitcher, and even that has its own little quirks.
