XM & Sirius Merger?
#1
Supposedly yes, according to the sources at theflyonthewall. An announcement of a merger between the two largest satellite radio companies, XM and Sirius, is expected to be announced at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit later today.

Thoughts? Concerns? I don't have it yet but I wonder what that would do to the programming.

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth

i hope this happens! Hopefully this would mean that i get better/more channels for *hopefully* the same price and have the option to get NFL as another 'package' (i have XM and i like it).

wouldn't they then be a monopoly and the fed would have to come down on them? Or do they still get lumped in with regular radio? I like the radioactive dog logo they have there.

it really needs to happen. the satellite radio market is too small for both to continue.

Satellite TV (DirecTV and Dish) have been trying to do this for YEARS. FCC won't let 'em.

hmm. Well let's see then. There's ~40 million high speed internet subscribers according to some stats I found on the web. It's probably a safe assumption that any family that can afford that could also afford XM or Sirius. If each potentially only gets half of them, 20 million, at ~$15/mo, that's 3.6 billion dollars per year?! And that's not counting sales of the players. Certianly a LARGE market to play in.

Another page shows that Sirius is currently around 6 mil subscribers, XM around 7.... so I'm sure they're feeling pretty good.

sure, but satellites arent cheap. the payments on one must be a bitch!

(50% market penetration is also extremely optimistic, even in 10 years)

you would be wrong in all of your assumptions. i repeat, the market is not there for both to survive indefinitely.

Howard Stern just got an $83 million bonus because Sirius went way over its suspected subscriptions. However both Sirius and XM have shown bigtime losses since their inceptions... last year alone both of their stocks fell over 45%. The biggest problem is they're investing WAY too much in their radio personalities (Stern is worth $500 million?!?).

I bought my mom Sirius for her car for Christmas and I think it's dope as shit though! Some great channels!

ok. They already pull in billions a year, and I think they might be able to pull in billions more. No WAY!

I hear ya, it's a silly amount of money, I guess they figured it'd pay off. :dunno: I would assume they know more than me.

lee is right. i'm not quite sure where you're getting your numbers from, but i do work in the media industry so i read a lot of applicable journals that say what i'm saying... their market is not a healthy one.

I'm a big XM fan myself. We sell WAY more XM then "Syrus" at the H-burg Circuit City. XM in the Van and Sylvia's PT...both free...with free service Smile. Basically XM gives away more "just pay the shipping" radios fo Circuit City employees...therefor I lovers them mo' beta. Sirius is just as good to jam out on...unsensored rap is unsensored rap if its on 66 Raw or Shade 45.
