seriously, try replacing the rear calipers and if that doesn't fix it, then you'll have a reason to sell it.

Quit being a bitch. You're driving a 15 year old car thats seen a bit of track (ab)use. Things break. Things need fixing. Or are you too busy baking cookies to fix it? You're going to sell the car because of a busted caliper that costs what, $75 to replace?

those calipers are a year old, have maybe 2 events on them, and probably 1000 miles.

also, it isn't a constant drag... it's like a flutter... leads me to believe it isn't the caliper cause these are fersh rotors, they don't have deposits.

I was actually waiting for you or Evan to jump in Big Grin

Hey Mike, if the rotor was warped, double check that the pads aren't worn irregularly. Lubing up the caliper slides is definitely a good idea. I do that everytime the pads come off.

agreed, keep that thing. to locate your problem, start from the beginning. did the car originally have drums in the rear? if so, what was involved with the swap to discs? where else could a problem arise?

brakes are simple hydraulic systems, troubleshoot every possibility and start knocking out things it could be.

Have you tried looking at the pads themselves, or tried using a different set? Some carbotechs I have gotten have a lot of slag and burrs on the edge of the backing plate that slides in the caliper. I usually sand or file them off so the pad fits in the slots more move freely. also check the slots in the caliper themselves, clean them and put a touch of grease in them

and lastly, its cold outside and a 'fluttering' sound could just be the noise the pads make.

i'd agree with Andy. If you had a warped rotor, it can affect the pad, causing the problem to continue. If you've got a spare set of pads laying around, throw them on and take them for a ride. If nothing else, it will rule out one more of the few things that could be causing it. literally, all I can think of that could be causing it would be:
caliper
rotor
hard line
flexible line to caliper
master cylinder
Start eliminating and don't give up! :-)

my order:
1. clean an relube sliders
2. remove e-brake line
3. buy a spare set of pads and try them
4. replace caliper

yes, the car used to have drums. i replaced those along with my master cylinder with all new parts just over a year and 1000 miles ago. in 2 track events, i had monster brakes. i just noticed this rubbing on a random drive to work about 2 months ago after the car had sat for a couple months, but i'm certain the e-brake was off. Confusedhrug: it is a never ending battle with this car and brakes... i'm just frustrated. no worries, i doubt i'll ever sell her.

tonight? new mirrors (f'ing maeng), maybe radiator hoses, maybe ioport mount. if i ever get out of work...

does HC require you to keep an e-brake? If not, get rid of them and eliminate one of your potential problems :-). Just keep a wheel chock close by.
