I watched the expo presentatation online tonight, and it sounds like the iPhone basically IS the next generation iPod.

Although, I do hope they come out with an iPod only version of this for about half the price of the phone. That I would actually look into.

as long as this thing stays as the top of the line piece of electronics and never gets outdated, i'll buy it. but seriously, i hardly ever use my ipod nano, i have problems filling up 4 gigs worth of music, let alone like 30 gigs that some ipods have and for the most part i like my phone. i think if i wanted my phone to do more, i'd have a blackberry.

Interesting perspective - I realize this is a pretty skewed comparison, as it does not show the screen of a treo/pocketpc/etc, but compared to the regular phone browsing its a significant improvement in quality/usability.

I was working on a project as an intern when 'WAP' was on the bleeding edge and thinking to myself "there is no way this is going to catch on" as it was way too clumsy with a little dot matrix looking screen. Damn was I wrong - the group I worked for was just 2 years too early on it, and now there's a lot of people who's head would explode without it (Matt). Even now though, anything in a 'WAP' format is pretty restricted and clumsy and requires additional server side work.

I was thinking about this on the way to work today. That's important because I usually ride my motorcycle to work, listening to my iPod all the way there, and all the way back. On a normal day I'll use it for another hour on top of that. At times my phone is very important (like right now, I don't want to miss a phone interview request or anything). I can't really afford to have my battery die.

I don't really want to carry a charger around with me, and I don't always have the option of plugging my digitoys into a computer. This thing would need a serious battery, or a very universal charger (I saw a post on /. the other day about wireless charging catching on, and I think that would work particularly well for a do-all device like this). That would be a pretty big point on the sale of it for me.

One method used a plugged in plate that you set on a flat surface and just set your portable devices on when they need charging (like leaving it on your desk and just plopping your phone onto it when you walk in). The other method uses a concept called inductive coupling that charges over short distances through the air.

Here's the cnet article /. linked to:

Wow, that charging pad is definately cool. I can see that catching on pretty fast.

I think short distances through the air is gotta be full of power loss... sounds like something that would cause cancer in lab rats too.

So does saccharin...

Although my comment was a little bit of sarcasm, I cant imagine inductive charging sitting next to you all day is going to be a good thing long-term... a lot of people one thought x-rays werent harmful for a long time too.

that small screen shot of the pocketPC is an older low res screen half of mine, and while my pocketPC does not have as high a res as the iPhone (the screen is amazing as ive said!) it can still surf "real" internet just like the iPhone, and 640 and 800 pixel screens will be out this year for pocketPCs (iPhone's is 640). I think I showed you surfing mm forums with my phone and its quite usable. Im certainly not arguing with you, I love the iPhone screen, but its not really applicable to compare its screen to a $100 flip phone or similar. (although even my drift has a damn good resolution)
Also keep in mind that just like Apple's cinema display monitor, they dont make the LCD, they buy from someone else (samsung, LG,etc) so there will be other devices with this screen.

ps- check out what is on the screen of the iPhone shot Wink

Wow, thats really unfortunate - almost a deal killer.

I was hoping that with a Mac OS on there you'd be able to load all sorts of cool hippie features on it.

they might have to rethink the name

http://www.breitbart.com/news/2007/01/10/D8MIN5CO0.html

Quote:Cisco Systems Inc. has owned the name "iPhone" since 2000 and today announced that it is suing Apple Inc. in federal court. Cisco obtained the trademark by acquiring InfoGear Technology Corp. over 6 years ago, which originally registered the name. It has been three weeks since Cisco's Linksys division released a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) phone for which the trademark was put to use. Apple had tried to gain legal rights to use the iPhone name but upon failure chose to unveil their iPhone yesterday anyway, a touch-screen cell phone with music, video, web, voicemail and e-mail capabilities.

"Cisco entered into negotiations with Apple in good faith after Apple repeatedly asked permission to use Cisco's iPhone name. There is no doubt that Apple's new phone is very exciting, but they should not be using our trademark without our permission." said Mark Chandler, Cisco senior vice president and general counsel.
