For 599, damn, uh, no thanks. Wait, AND I have to sign a two year contract?
Really, I'm good. I definitely have no throbbing desire for this "amazing revolutionary device".
He said 350 with a plan.
My phone was 300 with no plan, and my ipod was about $175. If this could seriously replace both then that sounds like a proper introdcutory price.
I'd hardly call it revolutionary, but if it does everything well then it will certainly be very evolutionary. If it becomes popular, or even if apple contracts accesories right, then the headphones for it would be awesome. Listen to your mp3 player without having to worry about whether you can't hear your phone ringing (sometimes I've missed it vibrating). It just might work.

Let's not forget the fact that phone/tech prices drop pretty quickly in a 6 month time. I wouldn't be surprised if this was $400 by end of year.

Especially if it gets popular. Apple would be smart to drop their minimum price policy on this product and let retailers compete with price.

I doubt that would happen, unfortunately

Yeah... sadly.
It's really cool that they can make retailers compete on service, something lacking in a lot of way usually. Price is more important to some of us, though... and their products are usually good enough to sell themselves.

Apple also hasn't played in the mobile market either... where it's pretty much a standard.
June is year end?

Probably not, but I'll buy one anyways. I wonder when they're hitting stores? the guy who wont spend $100 on a good phone and 'just wants a phone not the other shit' will drop $600 just because he is now surgically attached to the apple bandwagon?
Leaving out HSDPA/UMTS (ie - 3G) is a major oversight, especially considering this is supposed to be a data integrated phone
My HTC PocketPC phone does all of that, and I got it for under $400 (actually $200 after rebates)
The iPhone's screen is amazing though, 480 resolution is definately impressive. By far its best feature. (although VGA phones are supposed to hit this year, so that may not be an advantage for long)
i can tell you from experience touch screen buttons SUCK though. I hate hand dialing on my PPC. touch screen QWERTY? *shudder* This (along with price) is going to be the achilles heel of the device, unless apple gets the marketing engine working so hard that people dont mind that stuff sucks as long as they feel cool.
the rest of the presentation is pretty underwhelming to be honest, google maps have been out for a long time on phones (and on my helio it integrates with the built in GPS) and same with push news/weather, mobile web, etc.

There it is, as predictable as the sunrise. What took you so long?
I'm not sure how buying an iPod (that I didnt shell out any of my own $ for) puts me on the bandwagon anyways. If the iPhone user interface is as intuitive and easy to use as the iPod interface is, then sign me up.

And why does owning an iPod immediately make you a bandwagoneer? I own one, but my reason for purchase was certainly not the fact that it was popular.

Evan Wrote:My HTC PocketPC phone does all of that, and I got it for under $400 (actually $200 after rebates) Youre right. The Motorola A1200 does all that and very well I might add. It's a beautiful phone to boot.

Evan Wrote:the rest of the presentation is pretty underwhelming to be honest, google maps have been out for a long time on phones (and on my helio it integrates with the built in GPS) and same with push news/weather, mobile web, etc. I think the presentation is great. It's apple. It's what they do. Yes, they are expensive but man, that is the best phone you're going to get for a while. Lots of phones have google maps. Lots of phones are mp3 players. Lots of phones show and take pictures. No phone on the market does it like that thing does.
I have a bit of experience with the linux based Motorola A1200 which basically does everything that the iPhone does for less $$$, but people will buy the iPhone for the same reason they buy the iPod and not the Zune. Nobody cares about the ability to dig under the hood anymore. The "Windows" way... the "Linux" way of tinkering under the hood and options/features galore is over in personal computing. UI design combined with simple, powerful, intuitive features is the wave of the future. Look at the "Web 2.0" design style. Look at Apple's success with the iPod. Look at Apple's success with their laptops. Look at the backlash at BMW for that silly iDrive thing. Look at the backlash in the tech world at Vista.
Apple will always be expensive. There will always be products that do the same thing for cheaper. There will be products with more features. Sadly, nothing looks as good or is as easy and intuitive as Apple products.
Sadly, I agree with you on a lot of your points. The iPhone is too expensive, there's lots of competition, and it's only supported by its Apple clout. I think it's a tossup as to whether or not it'll be successful because of its inaccessibility to the general public.
I do think it is the most innovatively designed phone out there. It's got a great feature set and it's beautiful if it works as well as it did for Jobs on stage.
(One more note from above about the A1200. It's got a great little UI. The best that Motorola has produced, in fact. You cant tell it's running linux... but the UI is still crap compared to the iPhone)

If the iPhone user interface is as intuitive and easy to use as the iPod interface is, then sign me up. you would pay $600 for an interface? Hey, its your money, but if I were you Id probably stop buying the low end shit phones and try a better phone a touch cheaper than $600
and yeah, when apple comes out with a $600 phone that you pledge to buy when previously you only bought the low end shit-phones (which, speaking of predictability - always suck ass), you qualify for card carrying apple bandwagoneer. But maybe thats not such a bad thing if thats what you dig and you have the hamiltons to sport them.
(btw, try using my touchscreen ppc to dial sometime and see what you think of it)
It's 600 for a serious piece of hardware. And you haven't tried the touch screen yet. Don't knock it til you've tried it. Why so negative? It could be a really good implementation?
Actually I agree with all of what you wrote Jack save the 3G part
The phone does look fantastic, I guess I just expected something more groundbreaking. (im not going out of my way to AppleHateÔäó, honest - but it does bug the everloving shit out of me when apple claims to invent shit thats been around for a while)
The touchscreen is what the device will hinge on, if apple can somehow make it work without tactile feedback then this will be a good phone if the price comes down. But Im speaking out of personal experience with touchscreens that they just arent fun to use on a phone. Can apple do better? Maybe? But the crux of the problem is the nature of the beast.
I would be interested if it were demonstrated to be nearly indestructible. Semi-flexible or something like that. I wouldn't consider spending $500+ on a thin peice of glass and plastic to put in my pocket. And no, I am not willing to consider carrying an iPurse.
The only thing that stops a bad guy with a van is a good guy with a van
Actually, I feel like I've got to say something else here. I bought a MacBook Pro a couple of months ago and it's been the best piece of computer hardware I've ever bought. The 2nd mac I've owned (1st was a 12" PB that I sold almost immediately because it was too small). I do *everything* I could possibly want on it... and it's sooooo easy! Sure, I paid $1800 for a 2.16 CoreDuo with a DVD burner and a 15" display that I could've paid $1200 for from Dell after coupons. Let me tell you though... when I just drag it with me to the living room and plug it in to the TV and don't have to touch the display control panel (and I get the sweet remote)... when I get on a plane and shut the computer down realizing I haven't done so in 4 weeks... when I watch a movie, play a game, and do work and still have 45 minutes of battery life on a plane ride... when I make a quick home video for a friend with the built in isight and imovie... I don't regret the extra %30 premium (if you can call it that) for the industry's best support, most reliable hardware, and coolest features.
