2007 Detroit Auto Show
#1
This Sunday at the press days for the Detroit Auto Show Acura is going to show the world a new concept for a next gen sports car. Now, notice I have not said "NSX". That's because no one is really sure if this car is going to be called a NSX and whether or not it will share the NSX's mid-engined rear wheel drive layout. There's also speculation that this is a rumoured sub-NSX sports car.

Acura released a cocnept pic last month that leads many to think that this will be a front-engined GT type car. This would make it really easy to fit that V10 in there but in a way I'd be dissappointed if it wasn't MR like the original.

<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.vtec.net/news/news-item?news_item_id=644694">http://www.vtec.net/news/news-item?news_item_id=644694</a><!-- m -->

The only thing about the car that has been confirmed thus far is that it will have V10 power. How big of a V10 no one knows but my guess is between 4.5 and 5.5 liters.

It'll be a real shame if the NSX's successor is not MR but hopefully the car will break new ground and be worthy as Honda's flagship car.

ASsuming they don't do something silly like make a 3 liter V10 this will be the biggest engine they've ever made. They've had up to 12 cylinder race engines but never more than a V6 for production.

Oh yeah there are some other pretty sweet cars that will be debuting next week too. The Lexus IS-F should be showing up and will feature 400+ horsepower from its 5.0L V8. Subaru is also showing something but I don't know if its the next gen Impreza or not (probably not). I figure they'll probably be a few more performance cars there of note, I just haven't been reading many auto mags recently.

They're saying concept but the car is supposed to go on sale in 08 so its probably fairly complete. I'm pretty sure one of the first questions the TOV guys will ask is "How close is this to production?"

The NSX was already a bargain supercar. If it's priced below it with a V10 MR layout, holy majoly.

I'm certain it will have an MR layout. I'd be willing to bet cash money that it is.

The V10 surprises me, though. It's not an ideal engine layout, and requires some pretty significant balancing...not really hondalike. But maybe they're plaing the "Forumula Auiex" angle.

Why leap over the V8 though and go straight to V10? What racing classes are they going for with this new one?

I'm pretty sure Honda doesn't give a flying shit how this "Not NSX" is going to be classed by any sanctioning body.

Eh, it's a Honda. Even with a V10, it's still going to be slow Tongue

Has some nice elements but overall not too sexy to me. Doesn't seem to come together right.

And I've gotta say I'm not too gung ho about it being AWD (read: heavy) either :? Of course, from the wording of the Honda CEO's press conference maybe they are just going to equip the car with an active rear diff, maybe along the lines of Ferrari's e-diff.

Quote:This will include an all-new V10 engine that is Acura's most powerful ever. This front engine vehicle will also feature a new high performance, rear wheel drive version of Acura's Super Handling All-Wheel Drive.

I'll say, I think it looks pretty slick. That huge flat area right in the front needs a little tweaking, but I like it overall. But front engine, V10, AWD.... I just hope they don't make the mistake of calling it a NSX.

To me it just looks like a cookie cutter image for all "concept" cars coming out these days. Little itty bitty lights, big wheels, and superfluous fenders.

I wish they could give the head and tailights a little more depth and height, with all of that untouched space, and try and keep it low weight, although it will be hard.

It's definitely going to be hard to keep it light if it's going to have a V10 in it AND AWD. Should be a sweet car, though.
