Joey's Totally Predictable DD
Hmm good point, I think I asked Jarred about that and he didn't think it would be the issue, but if the new DV doesn't fix it that's what I'll look into.

Installed the new DV, it was easy aside from somehow losing a bolt and having to rummage through my collection of spares for one with the same thread pitch and length.

Shifts feel better but I'm still not getting the DSG fart, there's still a slight drop in boost right afterwards and then it surges back up. I tried to use the phone to create a graph of the boost but it erased it when i went to put the phone on wifi to email it to myself.

Whatever. After seeing the graph I realized how little boost it was actually dropping and how quickly it was building back up. It looked like maybe it dropped to 12lbs and took less than a second to get back to full chuff. Shifts at partial throttle feel totally normal. It sounds like something might be up with my car if Ken's still does the shift-fart thing at WOT with similar boost levels, but it's such a minor issue that I've decided I don't care. If anything gets worse I'll deal with it, if not it's fine the way it is.

Random side note, probably unrelated, the DSG went into fail safe mode the other day and got stuck in 1st gear. I pulled over and restarted it and it's been normal ever since, but it was a little unnerving. I think if the trans was actually acting up it would be shifting rough and starting/stopping rough(er than is normal for a DSG). If it does happen again I have a warranty on the trans until 100k so if anything it will just be an inconvenience

Oth.

Otherwise I'm pretty happy with this little thing. I still need to bleed the brakes and i think one of my front rotors might be slightly warped, so I might have to throw a set of front brakes on it eventually, but I'll probably procrastinate as much as humanly possible.

So all the tunes say they improve gas mileage which I assumed was just some horseshit they throw in there to make it easier for people to justify to themselves. But i'll be damned, now that the honeymoon period has worn off and I'm driving more like a normal person I've been averaging 25-27 on my way to work, up from 22-24, 100% city driving. I hardly hit 45mph on my commute. I've only been on the highway once lately but it was reading 30.9 after a short stint on 28.

Maybe in a decade or so it'll pay for itself!

Makes sense. Lots of cars (turbo'd especially) have really really rich factory tunes.

Hell, the Evo X's even smoke black under full throttle straight from the factory.

I remember Ken's old Ralliart used to fart a puff of unburned fuel on full throttle upshifts. Guess it had to go somewhere. :dunno:

My car does this too. Probably a mix of rich factory tune and exhaust buildup that gets cleaned out when you gun it

I dunno if mine will do that well, best I've seen so far is high 31s, still, pretty darn good considering it makes almost as much torque as Lauren's 540i did and that thing got like.... 13 around town.

I FINALLY got around to bleeding to brakes. They were baaaaaad. I'm guessing that I probably bled out the original fluid, considering it looked like swamp water. Unfortunately my vacuum pump broke on the first corner, but I did it at a friend's house so we were able to knock it out the old school way.

I think it should be good for a while, I'm caught up on maintenance until the DSG service at 80k. Not sure if I'll try to borrow a VAG COM and DIY it or just take it in and pay. My friend quit his job at the shop so I don't have my cheap hookup for that kind of stuff anymore. Sad

Ok so it sounds like the hard shifting issue I'm having is actually fairly common with APR and REVO tunes. A lot of people were saying that they only got the hard shifts before reaching full boost or when shifting lower in the RPM range. Mine will do it when indicating full boost, but I did realize that I have a habit of changing gear before 4k in this car because 1.) All the power is available at 2k once the snail scrolls up anyway and 2.) it sounds shit miserable about having to rev too close to the redline.

I stood on it on the way home yesterday and shifted at 5500 and it pocked into the next gear just like you'd expect. Because I refuse to pay $500 for a DSG tune, the new rule is <10lbs of boost and shift anywhere or >10lbs of boost and run all the way through the gear. Simple enough. :dunno:

I hate to admit it, but I think I've been enjoying the improved fuel economy from the tune more than the extra power. For the past week I've been commuting using extreme hypermiling techniques, I always shoot to average 28mpg over my ~8 mile, traffic heavy commute and it's surprisingly challenging sometimes, catching the wrong stoplights can easily cost 4mpg over such a short distance.

hahaha, I do the EXACT same thing (distance and everything). Still nice to know the power if there should you need it.
