Small companies dont always have the capital to pay people what they can get in the open market if they changed jobs.

I really dont think this is a big vs. small company phenomenon - it goes on everywhere. The paycheck isnt the whole story either.

depends on the small company though, a lot of them have much lower overheard, or the small company specializes in a certain niche market where they can charge a lot more for their services/product

but every company, regardless of the size, is going to pay you less than you are worth if they can get away with it. a lot less.

Lets not forget that in contracting, "small companies," if they qualify... they get special treatment and usually the contracts are there to really support them Wink and give them extra money for average performance.

Don't forget that most of those companies are subs to a prime on a contract, and the prime often does the "we don't pay you until we get paid" trick which means small companies are almost always getting fucked.

a minority female veteran owned small business would get every federal contract. ever.

i work for a company with 80 people and i really like this, especially coming from working for two 10,000+ employee employers in the past. The feeling of a close-knit company is great when the people are smart enough and professional enough to work with. The HR process is a bit of a mess, but this company was established 20 years ago.

i just started in late January with a new employer and i'm getting a pro-rated auto-raise until the end of March (i love this company) as they are shifting their appraisal process to make everyone on the same schedule. Before everyone was on their own schedule based on their date of hire, i have no idea how they kept that up. The new appraisal system is quantitative (i saw the prototype as i'm helping with HR as well) and seems like a pretty easy way to maintain your profile to make it easier for management to give you a raise.

After my glowing review ("Outstanding / Far exceeds expectations"), constant trips to NJ (I have to file NJ state taxes this year) and working 45+ hour weeks with no vacations since December, I was just rewarded with a 3.43 raise.......

Ask for more and explain why you're worth more. Go on some interviews to get some other offers if you're so inclined. I was about to get the same crappy 3% raise and I asked for more and got over 10% more.

3.43% more than I got this year, pay raises frozen across the company, travel cut, benefits cut, training budgets to zero, education budgets to zero... why am I still working for them? I guess the 20 hr weeks are making up for it...

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth

Despite my company having record profits, non-promotion raises were frozen to 0-2% this year. That 2% raise was gone awhlie ago with the hikes in taxes out here... so much fun...

12%, pro-rated to 10.5% because my tenure is just short of a full year.

Wife got 1.5% "bonus" despite nearly doubling her book of business and taking on the highest number of clients and 100% retention. Although, she is one of only 3 in the company to get a raise. Half in her company had pay cuts of 1-2%. She was promised a full raise in September and it will be made retroactive to the beginning of the year. Which I thought was interesting and will definitely be cool to see it go through.

I mentioned in a separate thread that I was going to accept a new job on a different project within my company. Well, that has finally all come to fruition. I took the super-computer C/FORTRAN development job, and was rewarded with a 4.8% mid-year raise for the lateral move. I wasn't really expecting new money, but I sure as shit wasn't going to turn it down.

edit: Oh, and we have a picnic going on tomorro with a dunk tank for allt he managers and PMs...that's worth something I guess
