Not really...

I dug my wheel out of the moving box a few weeks ago and have gotten back into this. Finally taking the time to practice, learn the track, practice in traffic and do some races. It's been a lot of fun for the most part! I've had some technical glitches and only a couple wreck-fests.
I've been driving the Global MX-5 Cup rookie series. I'm not really competitive but getting better each time. I really don't know how some of these guys are 3 and 4 seconds faster at some of these tracks. Sometimes I swear they have to be cheating. It's a fixed setup series and it kills me when I follow someone through a corner and their car sticks and I go sliding off.
One thing I need to do is modify the pedal setup to make it easier to heel-toe. I think the physics overreact a bit to down shifts that aren't perfect rev matches so it seems to be pretty important to make this easier. The pedals are even at rest, so when you press the brake, your foot is behind the throttle instead of even with it.
Also need to figure out how to get my frame rate up. I'm usually in the low 40s but one night it got into the 60s and everything felt and looked smoother including the feedback. I was just watching an instructional video and saw the guy was at something like 160.
Chan - I don't have the Nurburgring so not sure it does you much good. I don't know if they have a preview or something but let me know if you're still interested.

I have the same problem, I end up using the sequential shifting mode regardless of what setup the car is supposed to have when I'm trying to be competitive, I'll only use the clutch and shifter when I'm screwing around. Part of my problem is my home grown PVC rig has too much play in it and you can move things around if you try to slam gears more effectively.
I'd like to improve it, but it's a slippery slope. To make it more solid would make it heavier and less portable, the better half is already close to her wits end with my video game clutter in the living room, so it'd end up getting banished to the basement, then I'd need to buy a dedicated TV for it, so, meh. Paddle shifting it is.

Yeah, I've seen your setup and every time I go to Lowes I spend 10 minutes in the plumbing section planning something.
You're right on, I built a sturdy unit in the old house, it looked like crap but it was in the basement where nobody really went. It was a bitch to move and just not something I want to repeat. The current set up is the result of getting a hair up my ass one night. I took the seat off a bar stool we can't use anymore, found a piece left over shelf wood, bolted it on the stool base and attached the wheel and shifter. It's only stable because my legs barely fit and the outside of my thighs keep it steady. But it's amazingly light and easy to move! It's...tolerated.
I do want a better setup separate from the main TV so I can play during reasonable hours.
On to the series, this week's race is Summit Point Jefferson Reverse. I haven't had a chance to test yet but hopefully tonight.

Yeah the tracks aren't expensive and I'm actually pretty shocked the Ring isn't more than most. I haven't bothered with it because I barely have enough time to practice for the races in MX5 Cup. I'll let you know if I pick it up.

AND
Also need to figure out how to get my frame rate up. I'm usually in the low 40s [edit- actually in the low 30s, especially during a race or live practice session] but one night it got into the 60s and everything felt and looked smoother including the feedback. I was just watching an instructional video and saw the guy was at something like 160.
Did some research and most were saying 30 FPS was the bare minimum of playable. I messed around with the graphic settings that I already had on LOW or MIN but found a slider adjustment and put it all the way to MAX FPS. The graphics definitely suffered but I'm getting about 45 FPS now. What an incredible difference in the handling of the car! I feel more of the track, the feedback and response loop is much quicker and I can be much more precise and actually save the car now. The response and feedback loop wasn't really something I gave much thought to before experiencing it and then reading a post that pointed out something like at 30FPS and 140 MPH the car goes three feet before it gets your input, another three before you get feedback, and another three before you respond. It all adds up to not having much control. I'm just getting used to it and have to pull back some, the ability to save the car had me over-driving the shit out of it.
Also, I think I mentioned in here before (2 yrs ago probably ) that the steering always felt off. I noticed when I started playing again that the input to screen action was 1:1 for only a few degrees off center then the ratio steadily increased.90 degrees of input was like 270 on screen! It made turns like T1 at Summit impossible to be consistent. I tried a lot of recalibration and settings in the game and finally came across a thread that took me inside the wheel (Logitec) driver to adjust settings. It's now always 1:1 and tight corners suck a lot less.
Back to Laguna Seca this week and my times are coming more in line with top 5 avg times for my typical strength of field race.

FWIW 60 FPS to match refresh rate is that much better. Make sure vert sync is off, I had my framerate capped at 84 or 85 which happened to give me the least tearing

That's good to hear! I guess I'll have to step up my equipment at some point, running on (what was at one point) a pretty good laptop. I read a lot of folks do the capping at about the same rate, seems to be the way to go instead of trying to max out and dealing with fluctuations.

who's still on? I ditched the projector and box seat thing and have been off all year, but I just hooked up my 34" 21:9 and got the Nurburgring running today!

Well that was fun for a little bit... would be more fun if anyone I knew was doing this too

Going full hog crazy during Black Friday. I keep telling myself I will be able to autocross more, but taking an entire day off is becoming harder and harder, IRacing for a couple hours in the morning when Jess and Eli are still asleep is far more conducive to helping keep up my race craft nowadays.
Picked up a good VR Computer, Oculus Rift, and ordering tomorrow the Fanatec CSL Elite pedals and building my own rig with a spare race seat.
Who is still IRacing? Going to be joining in the WDCR-SCCA races, but also just running a lot of the MX5 cup races anytime I can.
Will have a very lightly used Playseat setup with Logitech G27 and shifter for sale soon.

Great! Where do I find the SCCA group? And the fixed setup MX5 has gotten pretty decent.

Computer came in yesterday, still waiting on one more cable that should be here tomorrow.
Spent a little time on rig v1.0 with at least v2, V3 and V4 probably down the pike because this bish is heavy!
