And lets be very clear, we have been putting kids (and adults... are we okay with caging adults?) in cages for a while now (off and on for 50 years). I have a problem with people "just now" having outrage.

Peoples understanding of national security, immigration, etc. is ignorant at best. like most things its super complicated. Search for my rant on immigration and our system. I work in national security AND my own father was an overstay on a visa. They system is broken very broken... and if you have an ounce of wanting national security, you cant do things like abolish ICE, set them all free, accept more in, etc.

To be fair, our immigration system has been broken for a very long time. Trump didn't break it, and those cages were there before him. I'd love for us to fix that too, though IMO there are more pressing "home" issues and sadly the actual fix is fixing the countries that they're running from. Not sure how we do that without being the world police (which I don't support)

When people shrug their shoulders and say, 'yeah he's racist and he's hurting people but the economy is good so whatever' they're basically saying they don't care what happens to their fellow Americans, as long as I get mine.

When the president is openly racist, enacting policies based on a racist worldview, and whipping up racist sentiment, it is a threat to people of color's safety and way of life. When people shrug their shoulders as the president goes further and further down that rabbit hole are effectively saying they don't care what happens to minorities. You may not consider yourself racist, but you're ok with a racist being the most powerful man in the world.

And that is what was so disturbing about Trump's election. Everyone knows that America has plenty of racists. But many didn't think in this day and age that so many people would be willing to ignore this man's racism and misogyny. People in their own family, people that are their friends. That all those people would turn a blind eye to a man who openly brags about sexually assaulting women. And totally ignore that this man doesn't think brown people deserve the same basic rights, opportunities, and access to justice.

In some ways I get it. They saw two 'bad' choices and chose the Republican option, or the let's-try-something-different option. For some of those people, Trump's sexism and racism are just disagreeable facets of him that they can overlook in favor of stuff they like. The same way they may hang out with Joe from work who is kinda racist but he always brings good food to the barbecue. But for me, and many like me, we can't overlook that stuff because those things are a threat to our existence.

Family separation was on and off the table often. Overfilling happens because its all coming in waves. Every ICE facility is over filled and has been. My father was in a JAMMED Krom facility in Miami FL during the Obama administration.

Pre 9/11 DHS, the entities you know as ICE and CBP were super under funded. They were part of Clintons cuts (and basically any president before him that was trimming the budget) prior to 9/11. They got a little bump after 9/11 when DHS stood up but their budget has been cut yearly (mostly) since.

Agent Orange Dreamsicle is terrible on most accounts. But we need to identify issues, identify solutions, push them to the people that matter. Americans have a lot of work to do as a nation on all sorts of levels. But this stuff is strategic and partisanship doesn't allow a strategic plan to work... that's why we are where we are. in its simplest form "how do we fix X without screwing over Z, A, and W?"
