Goodspeed can have his dreams, good lord, we all lust over lambos and ferraris, he doesnt have a car, so instead of working on shitpiles like we do all day, he surfs the forums and finds pictures of those imaginative cars.

I forsee goodspeed turning into us, its just he hasnt gotten to that stage. No offense goodspeed, but in terms of car tuning, he is like a newbie. So if we are supportive, HE WILL get on track, and WILL want to work on his car. Hell he liked working on my shitbox! That has to say something. :lol:

Lol, for the record, I can't wait to get out to auto-x's and the track in my own shitpile, I have such a blast at every event I manage to go to, and I have yet to find anything more fun than hauling ass in a go kart at G-Force. If it is any indication, I'm no longer interested in uber-hp drag cars, and I only watch road racing videos now :lol: Soon I will be joining you.

As for the topic at hand, I must say I am not for turning MM into a huge club with tons of members. I know this may seem counterproductive but I really enjoy the personal, friendly nature of this club and I'd like it to stay that way. Someone mentioned MM recruiting/turning into a bunch of riceboys, but I think the point is that we don't even achieve that these days. I think even they may be turned off of the forums. And who knows, we may not even know who we are turning away, if anyone at all. I am all for a FAQ section that n00bs "must" read to inform them of the nature of these forums. I'm used to it and see it as funny these days but I could easily see someone new taking it the wrong way.

As for that - you could always implement a quick 5 question quiz with the answers coming straight out of the FAQ. Lame, yes, but it would at least force them to skim it for answers...or read the multiple choices in the quiz

That's actually not a bad idea.

You could even have the text right in front of them, but have them answer very specifically so you know they read it.

MM is a club that is now big enough that there are plenty of people who have never met. When you do certain things with people you've never met that you do all the time with your friends there is definitely going to be acrimony. Especially when it stems out of a disagreement over something.

Of course we're not always going to see eye to eye but we can disagree without being disrespectful or downright attacking people.

Gerald, you can't really have a double standard like that if you want to put forward a face that any new people wouldn't be turned away from (as that seems to be the complaint I keep hearing). Joe Schmoe Freshman doesn't know RJ or I, and therefore wouldn't know when I make some off-hand comment about his mom/sister is just a joke between two friends. If you're going to censor content because you think that it might portray the club in a bad light to potential new members you're going to have to censor all content along those lines.

Moderation doesn't mean we have to lock everything down. As RJ said there is a happy medium where we can keep the playful banter that characterizes the group without berating or ridiculing the younger guys, new people who come on the forum, or people who don't know each other in person. Moderation by its very nature is a judgement call. I think if we have guidelines we can be more fair in making them. I don't think it will need to be at a point where every unkind word gets deleted but dropping C-bombs on people is obviously over the line.

Like I said eariler, I'm not going to go back and forth with anyone on this, I've said my peace and if you guys intend on making this place a hard a$$ mod controlled forum you will have one less person to moderate, maybe that's what you want, then you can get the flood of n00bs in each semester and turn this place into JMU Yo Boy central.

This place doesn't need to be a hard ass moderated forum but it also doesn't need to be a hard-ass-you'll-get-flamed-anytime-someone-disagrees-with-you forum either. And just like I said, how is a n00b ever going to join in what we do if they get flamed into oblivion for just plain not knowing? Sure, some people are always going to be show and shine ricers and the club is not for them. But there are plenty of people that are more than happy to join in what we do given the chance. Maybe they're not going to be running out to get their race license next month but some people have grown into the community rather than coming in ready to mix it up at the track. Hell, several of you weren't into autocrossing and track days when you started out with MM but people didn't cut you down.

I know some of this is out of a genuine desire to not see the club get corrupted and lose its character but the way to achieve that is not through hate and negativity.

I think meetings with that as the focus should be begun. Some see the occupation as untouchable. If there are students at JMU currently or future students that can invigorate the passion for motorsport back in the student community, they need to be found.

wrong. Jeff specifically asked where I was. I made a one sentence statement that you deleted my post and I didnt agree with the reasoning, NONE of which was private information or deragatory to you. In fact, I risked making MYSELF sound petty and whiny by not talking about the reasons.

Let me break it down for you, in that situation you had 2 acceptable options. and let me remind you what I said before about this community being an electronic extension of the real life relationships, NOT a typical car forum.

can you read?! how many times do i have to repeat myself? I said it wasnt about the deletion, it was about how you handled it, and how the forums are delegated. Whole groups of people have left forums (and started new ones) over much less. After all was said and done I wasnt really that pissed. I sure as shit have gotten posts deleted before. I decided to leave all the garbage on the internet and walk away from it. Im more productive at work now to boot. Even then, for people who are looking to join a group the natural thing is for them to come check out the forum to see if they fit in. Especially people who've found us on the internet. all of you are imagining things. every intro thread in the past 2 years has been overwhelmingly nice. I even sent the new miata kid a PM to welcome him a couple weeks ago.
Forums are by nature intimidating to newcomers. Its like coming into a room full of people and shouting hi, so naturally anyone is going to feel a bit intimidated.
If you want to ease that introduction you need to create an intro forum, NOT try to tell people what they can and cant say after the fact because just maybe they said something that might possibly hurt someones feelings but probably not.

For you to even begin to say I am not willing to put any sort of thought or effort into solving the problems at hand is preposterous.

Evan, if you're insinuating that Gerald hasnt done shit to help solve problems in the club (or anything else to do with MM) then you're pretty far off your rocker and just throwing rocks from the sidelines. So, about this shit - why not implement a flagging system on posts? If you think some post is out of line, flag it. If the post gets flagged by 5 people - it's deleted and replaced with something like

this may not stop the person from reading it for who it was intended, but they'll at least see that 5 other people..or however many...disagree with what was said.
