Goodspeed can have his dreams, good lord, we all lust over lambos and ferraris, he doesnt have a car, so instead of working on shitpiles like we do all day, he surfs the forums and finds pictures of those imaginative cars.
I forsee goodspeed turning into us, its just he hasnt gotten to that stage. No offense goodspeed, but in terms of car tuning, he is like a newbie. So if we are supportive, HE WILL get on track, and WILL want to work on his car. Hell he liked working on my shitbox! That has to say something.
Lol, for the record, I can't wait to get out to auto-x's and the track in my own shitpile, I have such a blast at every event I manage to go to, and I have yet to find anything more fun than hauling ass in a go kart at G-Force. If it is any indication, I'm no longer interested in uber-hp drag cars, and I only watch road racing videos now  Soon I will be joining you.
As for the topic at hand, I must say I am not for turning MM into a huge club with tons of members. I know this may seem counterproductive but I really enjoy the personal, friendly nature of this club and I'd like it to stay that way. Someone mentioned MM recruiting/turning into a bunch of riceboys, but I think the point is that we don't even achieve that these days. I think even they may be turned off of the forums. And who knows, we may not even know who we are turning away, if anyone at all. I am all for a FAQ section that n00bs "must" read to inform them of the nature of these forums. I'm used to it and see it as funny these days but I could easily see someone new taking it the wrong way.
As for that - you could always implement a quick 5 question quiz with the answers coming straight out of the FAQ. Lame, yes, but it would at least force them to skim it for answers...or read the multiple choices in the quiz

That's actually not a bad idea.
You could even have the text right in front of them, but have them answer very specifically so you know they read it.

You're asking people to rely on their common sense, and I think life in general has proved that most people don't have that or don't know how to use it.
Double standards lead to questionable decisions. I know how to behave in a polite society based on what I've been taught, but other's teachings may not be the same as mine. You know me and you know my attitude, I don't recall ever flaming anyone on this site. I maintain the behavior I was taught as a child, treat others how I wish to be treated.
That being said, n00b, existing student, or OG, if you say something that I know to be a false/stupid and I'm in the mood to do so I'll correct you.

I disagree with this and that is an issue that we will have to to deal with. At any rate, I'm not talking about when people who know each other joke on each other.
Kaan Wrote:and fyi your censorship on this issue tells me that you think MM is actually a CULT... much more then my passion for our traditions. MM is a club that is now big enough that there are plenty of people who have never met. When you do certain things with people you've never met that you do all the time with your friends there is definitely going to be acrimony. Especially when it stems out of a disagreement over something.
Of course we're not always going to see eye to eye but we can disagree without being disrespectful or downright attacking people.
Dragon Wrote:Gerald, you can't really have a double standard like that if you want to put forward a face that any new people wouldn't be turned away from (as that seems to be the complaint I keep hearing). Joe Schmoe Freshman doesn't know RJ or I, and therefore wouldn't know when I make some off-hand comment about his mom/sister is just a joke between two friends. If you're going to censor content because you think that it might portray the club in a bad light to potential new members you're going to have to censor all content along those lines. Moderation doesn't mean we have to lock everything down. As RJ said there is a happy medium where we can keep the playful banter that characterizes the group without berating or ridiculing the younger guys, new people who come on the forum, or people who don't know each other in person. Moderation by its very nature is a judgement call. I think if we have guidelines we can be more fair in making them. I don't think it will need to be at a point where every unkind word gets deleted but dropping C-bombs on people is obviously over the line.
white2kgt Wrote:Like I said eariler, I'm not going to go back and forth with anyone on this, I've said my peace and if you guys intend on making this place a hard a$$ mod controlled forum you will have one less person to moderate, maybe that's what you want, then you can get the flood of n00bs in each semester and turn this place into JMU Yo Boy central. This place doesn't need to be a hard ass moderated forum but it also doesn't need to be a hard-ass-you'll-get-flamed-anytime-someone-disagrees-with-you forum either. And just like I said, how is a n00b ever going to join in what we do if they get flamed into oblivion for just plain not knowing? Sure, some people are always going to be show and shine ricers and the club is not for them. But there are plenty of people that are more than happy to join in what we do given the chance. Maybe they're not going to be running out to get their race license next month but some people have grown into the community rather than coming in ready to mix it up at the track. Hell, several of you weren't into autocrossing and track days when you started out with MM but people didn't cut you down.
Chad I know one of your issues was that someone who is not into motorsports should not be president of a motorsports club, and I agree. The officers of the organization should be aligned with the goals and mission of the organization. Now from the looks of who is running we should be ok.
I know some of this is out of a genuine desire to not see the club get corrupted and lose its character but the way to achieve that is not through hate and negativity.

1) Have an FAQ
2) Have a Bitch / Gripe board. Any threads that get shitted up can be moved into there. It would probably have enough of its own actually threads too, with as many cranky old men as we have in here.

I think changeover in terms of interests is inevitable, but I think it is the alumnis job to introduce what made the club great, but if officers and current students have something else in mind, so be it.
The motorsport passion was fueled be Gerald, Chan, and other alumni. My first meeting ever Gerald had a Q&A session, with questions like who wants to be a professional racer? I think meetings with that as the focus should be begun. Some see the occupation as untouchable. If there are students at JMU currently or future students that can invigorate the passion for motorsport back in the student community, they need to be found.

Jeff specifically asked where I was. I made a one sentence statement that you deleted my post and I didnt agree with the reasoning, NONE of which was private information or deragatory to you. In fact, I risked making MYSELF sound petty and whiny by not talking about the reasons.
I went out of my way to not bring ANY of the details of why I left the forums out of it. I didnt make any dramatic posts about how I was wronged, I wasnt even all that pissed afterwards. And then you turn around and pull this shit?
Dont try to rationalize your deleting a non-inflammatory public comment with private comments. That doesnt fly, and you should be smarter than that.
Quote:The whole reason I PM'd you in the first place is because I thought you could be reasonable about it but instead you got all angry with me and left the forum over it. Why wasn't your response to post in the Site Suggestions forum that we need forum guidelines?
Why wasnt YOUR response to PM me FIRST instead of just deleting it? I would have chuckled and changed the post if you really thought it got anybody butthurt. You STILL cant get it through your skull that this is not about the deletion of one post, its how you treated me, someone you have known for a long time with COMPLETE disrespect.
Let me break it down for you, in that situation you had 2 acceptable options. and let me remind you what I said before about this community being an electronic extension of the real life relationships, NOT a typical car forum.
#1- PM me FIRST and say you think my post is inflammatory and please change it. I probably would have busted your chops (because it wasnt inflammatory) but I would have changed it to keep the peace and moved on. No big deal.
#2- PMed me to tell me that my post violated the rules of the forum and deleted my post. You dont have rules for the forum, so you are fucked here.
In the end, you told me what I can and cant say in a public area amongst friends. Thats completely unacceptable. You have no 'authority' here, there is no such thing. If we were hanging out in the paddock and I shouted at you to shut up and stop talking everytime you wanted to say something you wouldnt be too happy about that.
and let me remind you (And everyone else) that I was NOT bent out of shape about this, I was completely happy to move along and never say a word of this disagreement, continue to enjoy my time with MM at the track and Karting, etc. Unfortunately thats no longer possible, as Gerald dredged everything up so Im explaining it. I hate this stupid drama shit as much as anyone else. But if anyone pulls this shit on me, I come to play. All day every day. believe dat.
Quote: If you feel your statements were out of context feel free to post the entire conversation. Bottom line is that your attitude started with 'Fuck him if he can't take a joke' and that you ended by accusing me of protecting ricers and douchebags.
please provide where I said anything of the sort publicly. I was annoyed at the time and YOUR attitude, but you CANT justify what you did, with something I said to you in private, AFTER you did it. seriously, where the hell are you getting your logic? you fucked up bigtime posting a private conversation, and you need to admit it.
btw, the thread/post in question was NOT an intro thread, and it wasnt even a potential member so dont give me that bullshit
Quote:Maybe you just don't realize how it appears to people who don't know you but when you start making fun of people like that what are they supposed to think? Why is it that more than one person here expected you to be posting hateful things in here? Could it possibly be because that you've been hostile in the past? Or is it just that everyone is lying and unfairly characterizing some of your posts? You yourself said that you've been hostile to noobs in the past.
bullshit. give me some examples. recent examples. I joke around alot with people I know but I havent flamed anyone I didnt already know in a long time. Travis is probably the most recent, and he damn well deserved it :p
Quote:But there's no reason for you to be getting all bent out of shape and angry now over one post.
If the issue was that there needs to be forum guidelines, then make it about forum guidelines. You instead focused on being angry that someone dared to delete your post.
can you read?! how many times do i have to repeat myself? I said it wasnt about the deletion, it was about how you handled it, and how the forums are delegated. Whole groups of people have left forums (and started new ones) over much less. After all was said and done I wasnt really that pissed. I sure as shit have gotten posts deleted before. I decided to leave all the garbage on the internet and walk away from it. Im more productive at work now to boot. But you brought it down to the personal level with the worst thing you could have done.
Quote:I've brought these things up before, as a matter of fact I brought this up when the whole separate forum idea was first discussed.
yet as a mod you havent actually done anything, instead you babysit the forums and tell people arbitrarily what they can and cant say based on your opinion?
Quote:Even then, for people who are looking to join a group the natural thing is for them to come check out the forum to see if they fit in. Especially people who've found us on the internet. Maybe it would do us well to lay off the sarcasm and flaming and what not for new people? Or am I just imagining that the forum has become unfriendly to noobs?
all of you are imagining things. every intro thread in the past 2 years has been overwhelmingly nice. I even sent the new miata kid a PM to welcome him a couple weeks ago.
Forums are by nature intimidating to newcomers. Its like coming into a room full of people and shouting hi, so naturally anyone is going to feel a bit intimidated.
If you want to ease that introduction you need to create an intro forum, NOT try to tell people what they can and cant say after the fact because just maybe they said something that might possibly hurt someones feelings but probably not.
Quote:For you to even begin to say I am not willing to put any sort of thought or effort into solving the problems at hand is preposterous.
so prove me wrong. you have a long standing problem that I just thought up of several solutions off the top of my head that would take a couple hours to implement. yet you and none has done shit. over this problem in the past 2 weeks you have lost one of the most experienced drivers in your club, and a nasa official. both longstanding members. so where is all the effort in solving the problems?
Quote:The truth is I've given a lot of thought of why this forum sometimes descends into a bunch of useless bickering and hate.
Just an FYI, posting a private conversation publicly tends to do that. Maybe you should think these things through.
I find it particularly ironic that you told me how you wanted to keep it private, yet you dredge this thread up after several days of inactivity, when there was nothing bad said about you in the first place.
disclaimer- its late and Im writing stream of consciousness, excuse grammar and speeeeling.

Evan, if you're insinuating that Gerald hasnt done shit to help solve problems in the club (or anything else to do with MM) then you're pretty far off your rocker and just throwing rocks from the sidelines. I understand the premise of the argument, in that the onus is on Gerald, but thats a bunch of BS - No one has put more effort into this thing.
I'd like to know which members the club has lost? Kaan and Chad are still posting... and if you'd seen some of the crap that was posted then you might agree with deleting those posts - and that wasnt done by G, so its kind of a moot point regardless.
