Winchester to reston commute, you are looking at 1.5 hrs each way, maybe a little less if you use the toll road ($4.50 each way). If it rains... well good luck with that. Just an FYI - consider the commute time and cost if you are going to live out in the sticks.

Ryan and I usually disagree about commute times from out west but that one's probably pretty close, if not an underestimate. The section between Leesburg and Route 9 and the section between the Greenway toll plaza and Reston get pretty horrific if you're not through them by 8am.
What I'm not quite sure is how he managed to get $4.50 out of $3.20.  Still expensive, yes, but about 30% cheaper than stated.

I thought it was $3.85, plus another $0.50 to get off the toll road in reston - I just rounded up 
Either way, $8-9/day adds up... $160-180/month just on tolls.
Edit: I have coworkers that commute from WV and Winchester... we give them endless shit for wasting their lives and money away sitting in a little box in a parking lot.

If you're going east you still get hit with a .50 toll, but going west you dont, so thats one less one to pay... you're right on that one.

In the overall scheme of things, Winchester really isn't that far from the Toll Road. It's only about 30-35 minutes to the start of it, all on route 7 which only really gets backed up at route 9; if you left by 7-7:15am you'd be fine to make it to work...assuming your work started at 9.
Sales are open as of now, delivery won't be until the first quarter of next year though as we're only taking lot holds on the first homesites until our state documents are approved. After those come in we're gonna start rolling!
The townhomes similar to the ones I'm selling (the Carnegie, which I used to build) off of Evergreen Mills Road outside of Leesburg at Courtland Farms are available sooner, but they're slightly more expensive and have a 2 car garage.

Personally, next year I'll be willing to save $200,000 on a place to add a little time to my commute. Of course, I don't work up that way, I'll most likely be in the Shenandoah Valley / Frederick County area for a while ^_^

I wake up at 7:55 to shit, shower, shave and get to my desk by 8:30.
I spent an extra $170k for 1100 more sq ft and to take time away from my commute. Then again, short commute is a major priority in my life.

Not everyone can afford to live that close to their jobs. Fortunately, I'll most likely be working in an area where housing prices are lower than they are in Northern VA.
To put things in perspective, my partner lives in Harrisonburg. He bought a luxury townhome there, probably one of the nicest townhomes I've ever seen, for the amount that you paid "extra" for a closer commute and a finished basement. He only commutes about 25mins to work, up 81, with no traffic every day =P
This is just me, but I actually enjoy my time in the car every morning, even though I'm commuting a long distance. It gives me a chance to wake up and to listen to EITM to get my day rolling ^_^

You know what I enjoy? Living 4 miles from my office. Maybe it's just me, but I actually like being in my bed. Gives me a chance to... umm... sleep longer. I'd also venture to guess that I make more than he does un Harrisonburg (except maybe 'cause it's sales, which I'd never wanna do).

If you dont work in NoVa or DC where the job market is for most of us isat/cs/business majors is... thats not much of an option. Even if I did find a job out in in the valley i'm not sure I'd take it - as much as I hate nova, I like being near my friends and family if I'm going to live here.
Having a long commute sitting in traffic severly impacts my quality of life. Thats my choice though. I'm not as bad as Chris, but I sure would like a 4 mile commute. As it is right now, my 15 mile backroads commute on the bike really isnt bad. 28 minutes door-to-desk.
