And And I'd bet that it's not a good solution to just say "residents only" because it effectively turns use of the road during peak hours into a public good.. and public goods are subject to heavy free riding. Make free riders easier to identify and you've eased the situation.

asteele2 Wrote:I'm not running cost/benefit analysis for the cops, but you've got to be realistic. How about you just not leave your shit in an unlocked truck?

WHERE did I ever say I'm not a dumbass for leaving my shit in an unlocked truck? Wait.. I didnt. Yeah, it was a mistake in the middle of moving and the truck was unattended for maybe 15 minutes.

Why is it unrealistic to make some phone calls in the hunt for something thats of little perceived value to anyone else? What if they had stolen my $1500 bicycle - worth it to follow up then? What about my CBR? WHERE is the line drawn on what to follow up with? If they had not used the phone, credit card AND I had no idea who did it - ok, big waste of time because there's zero to go on. I had all that and provided it to the cops - they didnt have to search for it. [/i]

I'd bet it's not worth it for them to try and find any of that shit based on other kind of loads.

You're saying "where do they draw the line?" Well, it's got to be drawn somewhere. Heck - when you make the mistake, why should they look at all? If you didn't make the effort, why should they?

Because thats what they get paid for from tax dollars. Story would be no different if they smashed the windows of my locked truck and stole the wallet.

Hypotheticals aren't fair game.

The Police aren't paid to investiage everything. If you want them to investiage everything then they need to be given more money to get the resources. Otherwise, they've got to prioritize.

But you're hypotheticalizing that they dont have the resources for it Wink

asteele2 Wrote:Otherwise, they've got to prioritize.

They should prioritize that over handing out $25 traffic tickets, which was the original point. Circle of life Wink

Well, the tickets are a different game. You're low hanging fruit by disobeying the obvious, and revenue generation at little/no cost is usually a prety efficient operation Smile

this actually brings up a good point. Where does the cops accountability lie?
I think its a fair conclusion that it should lie with teh people that pay their salaries (and pay for the service)
yet those people have no real direct course of action if unhappy with the service.
Ultimately its a political issue, so the cops directly answer to the politicians and only indirectly answer to those paying their salaries.
So the cops are only motivated by politics and enforcing laws only politically advantageous, not servicing their customers. And since politics involves money, they dont provide a service at all, in fact their salaries paid by their customers are utilized to get more money out of their customers. (kind of liek government agencies using government money to lobby/petition the goverment for more money....that happens all the time example PBS)

SInce this is clearly a failed system....is there a better one?

Maybe the counties with elected sherrifs have the right idea? At least you are 1 step closer to direct accountability.

Well this is assuming they are handing out enough tickets to justify their salary and equipment for that day AND the costs involved with the courts....

Besides, my shit is more important than anyone else's shit - its the nova way!
