Gay marriage should be legal in all 50 states by then so that works out really well for you. Big Grin

if, when you propose to a woman (or man  ) you can't already be sure if this is, or is not an issue, than you need to seriously re-evaluate your decision.

i was pretty much the first person out of the people i hung out with in high school/college to get married and it's been great, no regrets at all. sure, you have to make a sacrifice here or there but it should never be anything that will decrease your quality of life or make you regret committing yourself to someone else. i think the married people on this board are a good example.

edit: just realized everyone else said this, sometimes hilariously

Goodspeed Wrote:Heres a question for all you old ass people on here Wink Are any of you on the fence about marriage b/c you fear it'll sap all the fun out of life? This probably sounds "immature", but I don't think I'll even contemplate married life until my 30 somethings because I want to make money, enjoy a nice life for myself, and cruise singles bars looking for milfs. The last thing I want is a wife that emasculates me and tells me what I can and can't do, how is that living? I guess I'm not sold on the insitution of marriage. Please speak up with your opinions, or put on your jungle hat and we can go cougar hunting together

Valid concern based on the mistakes of many men out there. Some men need a woman like that though. It doesn't sound like you do. Nor do most of the guys in this club off the top of my head.

My advice is just to be picky. Don't tolerate someone that dominates your life. Don't even let it happen even a little bit. You have to be in control of the relationship.

The right woman won't drain you. She'll be your partner in crime, sharing things you enjoy and being a catalyst to your dreams. You want a relationship that constantly raises the bar for both people. And you want a woman that is up to the challenge.

At least that's how I view the situation based on a handful of serious (3+ year) relationships.

I was engaged once and I couldn't get eliminate this nagging feeling that I'm getting in to one of "those" relationships that you fear above. I broke off that relationship. At the time it was the hardest thing I'd been though, but it has been oh-so worth it. I can pretty much guarantee you I'd be miserable or divorced by now ahd I not been prudent.

Just don't rush it. If it doesn't feel right, it's not right. When it's right, you'll know (seriously).

Heh, no game whatsoever. I'm just enjoying the young/single/do whatever the hell you want without a care in the world life

Speaking of the failure rate Lee brought up, I just think people don't take marriage as seriously as they used to. Not all of course, as shown here, some people have their head on straight and realize that it takes effort and work every day to make it a success. The first sign of trouble usually means divorce or else they'd actually have to put effort into it. My grandparents tell me stories of their 61 year marriage and it sounds nothing like how most people view marriage today.

I'm pretty sure the divorce rate is at its lowest level in like 30 years.

U.S. divorce rate falls to lowest level since 1970

Despite the common notion that America remains plagued by a divorce epidemic, the national per capita divorce rate has declined steadily since its peak in 1981 and is now at its lowest level since 1970.

The more gooder quote is this

Quote:Some experts say relationships are as unstable as ever ÔÇö and divorces are down primarily because more couples live together without marrying. Other researchers have documented what they call ÔÇ£the divorce divide,ÔÇØ contending that divorce rates are indeed falling substantively among college-educated couples but not among less-affluent, less-educated couples.

yeah, I've always heard that, but after 4 years of happy marriage, I have to say I've VERY rarely, if at all, felt like I've had to "work" or exert much "effort" to keep it going. I imagine Jess would agree. If you have enough trust and respect for the other person, and realize that their happiness is now YOUR happiness, then you both win! We both do what's best for the team. Simple really. Sometimes that takes some compromise, sometimes doing something different than you would normally do, but who cares. Go team!

Divorce is just the most extreme result of unhappy marriage. There are tons of people out there who live in loveless marriages for financial / children reasons. Often those people cheat on their spouses or spend a lot of time away from home to avoid each other. Probably half of all of my friends (including myself) are from a divorced family and probably another 5-10% of parents of my friends are living obvious loveless marriages.

The bottom line is that you want to avoid going down that road, and the best way to do it is to not settle and really analyze your decision to get married before you make it. You'd be surprised how many people don't do that.

No, I don't want them tainted already by American culture. I want them to step right off the boat, impressionable and malleable and appreciative to be in the United States!
