Rusto-roller paint tutorial

truck is definitely green, plus I think green looks good on that particular truck.
I'm going to drive it over to the burg before too long so Rex's dad can see how far it's come, maybe he'll want it back :-p.
It really wasn't a whole lot of work to me. Probably about 10 hours between removal, install, and all painting. Plus, it's spread out over time so it isn't as bad. I didn't rattlecan it b/c this has a better finish to it. Very glossy, instead of the rough feel that usually comes with a spraycan job.

Did you roll on like 10 coats and sand each one? Doing that you can make peter pan crunchy smooth and glossy.

LOL, no. I only sanded it three times with 11 coats, two of which were at the very end. Every spraypaint I've every felt has a very rough texture, though I guess it's possible to spray paint then sand down until it feels smooth. I knew this technique worked though; maybe I'll try the spray on the tailgate or something.

Hey, it's worth a shot and I think you could really get the cost down w/ spray can's, you don't have to buy rollers! I think it would come out a little evener as well, although it may just be the flash from your camera.

total cost is hard to say b/c I used a lot of leftovers from the first job on the SE-R (extra roller, leftover mineral spirits, leftover sandpaper). My guess was that it was probably close to $50 since I only used a half sheet of sandpaper for anything over 400 grit, I used a smaller can of paint, and the small can of mineral spirits would have been more than enough for this. I think I probably had around 8 hours in the actual painting, probably another 2 or 3 in the prep, removal, and installation

hey dave, so i'm currently in the middle of doing this to the hardtop, but i dont think i thinned the paint out enough. its been drying overnight with a fan on it but its still sticky to the touch. also, i can see drip marks from it running, but perhaps not running enough. i thinned this stuff out, like almost watery thin with mineral spirits. am i just using too much of it? i hope it dries before friday...

it looks a bit uneven because i'm waiting for it to dry so i can sand it down and put another coat on it, but at this point i doubt that 2nd coat will dry in time, so i might have to go one more event with a ghetto looking top.

Sounds like you're doing it too thick. Are you gently rolling over it (no pressure at all) after you've put the paint down? That is supposed to pick up the excess paint, allowing it to self-level.

yeah, i'm kinda just pushing the roller and not pushing down on the roller. how long did it take for one of your layers to dry?

typically i gave it 8 hours to dry. If you'd like I can probably swing by and take a look to see if I notice something wrong.

its all good, dont worry bout it. its gotta be dry by tomorrow anyway for VIR. i havent checked it yesterday but by the time i check it today, it'll have had a solid 48 hours to dry. i think my mistake was the base coat being too thick. i figured i had thinned it out enough but after applying it, it was definitely more "goopy" than i thought. i really thinned it down a lot after that. if its dry, i may just sand it down fairly evenly so it looks decent for this weekend then continue to add smoother coats when i get back.

It is very possible that the goopy first layer is going to have trouble drying with the extra coats on it. My suggestion would be to not apply any more for a week or more to make sure it is dry all the way through, possibly even sanding off the top layers to be sure. If layers of paint are laid over a wet coat, bubbles may eventually rise up and cause "solvent pop" later which will make it look bad. How many layers did you lay down?

i put down the primer, sanded that down, a base coat which i suspect was not thin enough. it was kinda tacky to the touch but not wet. i put another coat on top of that before i figured that i was essentially rewetting the first coat instead of putting another coat on top of that and havent touched it since.

I'd recommend that you sand it some next weekend or later, then lay down a couple more coats and should be good to go. I seriously don't mind swinging by to take a look, check the consistency. My shit was super thin (probably thinner than necessary) but it dried really fast and I just put on more coats.

yeah, i stopped by to take a look at lunch today. it was dry, but definitely lookin a bit haggard. i think if i continue to sand then paint, sand then paint, it'll even out. the only thing thats worrying me is air bubbles which hopefully will not be too prevalent, but we'll see.

Mike, you're disgusting :-).
Maeng, you should be fine. Just let it set, sand the shit out of it sometime next week, and then just paint it like you would. If you are changing the color, it will seriously take like 4 or 5 coats to get good coverage if you are thinning it enough, if that helps.

washed mine last weekend for the first time in well over a month. Paint doesn't appear to be fading at all and still cleans up very glossy and looks fantastic.
