How good are the welds on the intake manifold?

Should be oil and water.

Very few factory turbos are just oil cooled.

Well, all turbos, water cooled or not have oil circulating through them. Water cooling is just a method of using coolant as a heat sink to reduce the coking effect of oil in the turbo's center housing, increasing the longetivity of turbo life. I'd like a turbo timer to simply keep the car on after shut down so the hot oil can circulate out of the turbo instead of just sitting there. If you're saying that water cooling negates the need for a turbo timer, I don't think thats correct...I think its beneficial either way.

And...ROFL on the wheels debate. They're going black. I don't like the look of a lighter colored wheel on a dark silver car, looks odd to me so black it is.

i agree. not a major necessity, but can't hurt.

with water and oil cooled turbos you don't necessarily need to let them run for over 30 seconds after driving. honestly it's a matter of preference here. that's plenty of time for oil to circulate out. after hard runs or extended boosting, a longer cooldown could be observed, but even at a minute, that's the time it takes to gather your things before exiting the car. just don't turn the car off first. /shrug.

Yeah turbo timers IMO are mostly pointless. As long as you're not flogging the shit out of your car and then turn it off immediately, you should be fine. Even if you do a couple of WOT pulls and then drive your car a couple of minutes back to your home and turn it off, I wouldn't lose sleep over it. TTs are more of a gimmick than anything else.

Just use your brain and save $100 bucks. If you just drive your car up the street to the store and stay out of boost, it doesn't need to run for another minute.

having a turbo timer wont hurt and if its for piece of mind, then thats fine. a water cooled system is kept under pressure. natural heat convection will circulate the coolant for a more even cooling of the entire system which would negate the need for a turbo timer on a stock piece. the oil cooled part will not circulate oil when the car is off. like i said, it wont hurt to have, but its definitely not necessary.

dont forget that idling the car will increase the water temperature, up to around when the fan switch goes, around 210 degrees on most cars.

Update: I know there were some mumblings about black wheels on the car...well, a teaser:

DJ suggested putting on two of his Evo wheels w/Hoosiers to see how black wheels would look, and I'm sold. I absolutely loved the look, I think it makes the car look 10x meaner and more aggressive. I know, I know...theres a metric assload of wheel gap and hopefully that will be resolved in the future. Can you see how happy I am?

Well, I've gotten completely used to the car by now, the clutch and all, so I guess I can go ahead and list some future plans I've had floating around in my head. I won't say I have the technical skills to complete it all on my own but I'm itching to really get working on this car now that I have no reservations about driving it and to learn as much as I can.

Anyways, future plans:

Modify driver
Wideband
Alarm/turbo timer
Tokico Illumina's (TEMS compatible) w/ Eibachs
Repaint rear bumper cover, came to me with some spider web cracking in the paint
Some sort of audio system
Short shifter - very expensive for these cars
Intercooler - stock one is horrible on the MK3

I guess I could go way into the future and talk about upgraded fuel and a larger turbo setup etc etc but thats just a dream right now. I'd like to maintain the quality of the car first and foremost really. I'd also like to try my hand on the quarter mile just for fun.

Oh, and tucked away in the glovebox was an envolope that had the original dealer's name on it (Checkered Flag Toyota in Va Beach). Well, I kept saying I'd look in it but never got around to it, I finally did today only to find the original window sticker, complete with even more documentation on the car. It just gets better every day

Speaking of this car's history, here's a few videos of my exact car back in the day when the previous owner (Gus) purchased it, he had barely modded it at MIR. Lots of missed gears according to him, but the second link shows him chasing down a BMW
