How did these people get such high starting salaries anyway? Is it based purely on time in the work force?

Well... in that case I'm guessing it has a lot to do with the salary they came from. Even if you get measely raises every year, being in the work force 2-3x as long as you adds up and switching jobs usually gets you ~10-15%. My guess is they've been around long enough that they were already making 20% more than you before they started there. In some cases, you really CAN'T make up for experience, even if it's not applicable... but 30k is a big difference for the same job description.

Fixed that for you. Sorry, pet peeve of mine.
I think you should document all of this, and if your boss comes through with a lame excuse in 3 weeks, go over his head.

There really isn't much documentation to do since I'm not supposed to know what people make. It is my boss' boss that will also be doing the HR thing on my behalf as well. Over them and I feel I'd start tarnishing my image... I'd rather just go with the sales/deployment position.

HR doesn't need to be involved in salary re-negotiation, here if I take my 2 weeks letter to my boss, he will take me to see his boss and his boss will ask me how much, if we agree on a number I stay, if not they take the letter, no HR involved. Each 2-tier manager knows how much wiggle room there is in everyones salary.
Mike, he's blowing smoke up your arse, to busy to deal w/ his employees? Please. what a joke.
This might actually be a good topic for another thread but I'm with Rex. Reverse-isms really annoy me. The fact that someone being racist against whites is reverse-racism is racist in an of itself.

While I agree with you that managers know the ranges, it still has to be approved by HR is most cases... and they usually have the power to nix the boss' suggestion. That said, it's a little shady that he's "too busy" to make sure his employees are happy. I mean honestly, it couldn't take more than a half hour to write the email or call, right?

Yep.
At annual review time with my last company, my boss kept blowing it off for a month - and when we finally sat down, he had nothing to say and my "raise" (if you could call it that) would still be retroactive to the 1-year date. It wasnt, and no one wanted to do anything about it. Thats when I decided I'd be gone at the end of the year.

Actually - if I'm not mistaken chad, we can look up the ranges ourselves eh? I know I know the range I'm in right now. Might not be able to look up people in a different tier, but I think you can find your own tier salary ranges - which gives a good idea when it comes time to knowing what kind of percentage of the possible raise you got for your position.

yea you can lookup the range for your level and then your job classification (for example Software Engineer is paid more than System engineer). Not really my point. I could care less what my 'level' is, I just want them to show me the money and that's what I say, when I get this BS about your topping out at your current level I just say so? Promote me or give me a cash out. At LM you always want to be at the lowest tier in your level, that keeps your compo ratio high, netting you more $$$ at raise time. Or just tell them to hell w/ it and negotiate every year for more money
Yeah, I've found the secret to getting more money is to not accept any bullshit and just make demands. If you're worth it, you'll do well for yourself.

Hrmm..that's good info - being that I just started, i'm about 25% of the way in the range for my level - and the manager was telling me some shit about wanting to get to the next 'level' before you get too close to the top in the current level so that you get more raises..but I was thinking it'd be sweet to be somewhere in the middle already by the time the next level starts. I wasn't sure that was negotiable or not. I also didnt negotiate any on starting salary, and I want to kick myself for that.

aren't you still sitting in the tank being worthless? probably best to not make salary demands until you are at least off overhead .
