Well, everything that was taken apart is back together for the most part. Car runs exactly the same, except for sometimes the idle stays a few hundred rpm higher while slowing down, sometimes it doesn't, and sometimes (moreso when cold?) it bounces.
The exhaust is an even bigger pile now. I can't get in and out of the driveway (and I can't park on the street because it's not inspected yet), so I scrape every single time I get home or leave. Essentially, the entire thing has to be redone, but if I'm gonna do that, I'm gonna do it right...and I can't see how it's not going to cost at LEAST $1k. For a fucking exhaust...

Well if I can't make it run right, I might as well make it look like it does.
Touched up a few things in the engine bay:

well....it sure looks nice! so whats up, just running rich/idling rough?
are there any specialists who would really be able to diagnose this for you, or is it one of these things where you'll just have to take it all apart to eventually find what it is?

I dunno. I'm pretty close to being in over my head with this thing. Just about the only thing that bolts onto the longblock that I haven't replaced or swapped with a buddy is the VANOS...but mine doesn't make that much noise, and these aren't really symptoms of one that's gone bad.
Last things I'm going to try are to go over all the grounds (for example, that one strap at the bottom is a start), and then I'm going to try and find a local guy who actually did his own swap and go over the harness wire for wire. After that...I'll throw in the towel and bring it to either Martin Motorsports in Alexandria (owner has an S52 e30 M3) or RRT in Dulles.
If it isn't something electrical or a crap swap (and I can't rule that out yet...even though a 'reputable' shop finished it, my amateur ass found two wires that weren't hooked up), then I pretty much have only the worst to fear.
Oh yeah, and I'm also down on power. Mikey beat me in a race (well, we were driving each others cars)...but the S2000 pulled, and that shouldn't really happen. It had better gearing at the speed we started at, but not one carlength worth I wouldn't think.

BJ, have you checked for proper wiring of the O2 sensor? I ran across this thread over at R3V, and I'm not claiming to be an expert or anything, I just didn't know if you'd seen it:

No wonder BJ is having a hard time - those wiring diagrams are t3h suck.

I like the "cloud" illustrations the best.
German voodoo.

My Dad's VW shop manuals are even slightly more cryptic than the BMW one. He's a master tech, been doing this for 30 years and can wire circles around me - he told me to look at the service book and said "can you figure this shit out? I'm fuckin' lost here"

What does the cylinder mean a schematic? I've never seen that before though the only complex schematics I've seen were for japanese cars.

I think it just means shielded wire.

That diagram makes complete sense now. Obviously, BMW uses Visio for all of their diagrams.

Visio makes me want to smoke crack

Hence why the diagrams are so confusing.

Visio gives me nightmares, as does wiring.

Threads like that are the reason I wanted to buy a swapped car instead of doing one myself...looks like I got both sides of that coin. And apparently that coin was on fire and razor sharp on all edges.

Well, reading some of the thread, it seems like some of those symptoms are what you might be having.

I tried to take a video of it idling with my baller new cellphone, but the sound is terrible. If you have a sub connectod to you computer and turn up the bass, you can kinda tell (crank the bass and you can actually feel it) how lopey the idle is in this video. The guy made it before he put it up for sale.
