I think the point of my 'attentionist' post was missed. I did not mean to imply that listening to music will keep you awake. If you're going to fall asleep, you're going to fall asleep, end of story.
The intention was to point out to people that listening to music on a long drive will break up the monotony of a 5 lane superhighway cut straight as an arrow through anything in it's path. Monotony, and endless streches of landscape that all looks the same can put people on autopilot. Music can serve as an aid to break up that monotony, decreasing the "stress" that puts on the pilot and enabling him or her to focus more attention on the task at hand, however boring it may be.
Even better, earplugs, or in-ear headphones, will interrupt wind noise (though, granted, earplugs are the reccomended solution). The wind noise is more than just an annoyance - a sustained noise at a high enough volume (like highway wind buffeting) can cause tinnitus: damage to the ears.
