Why shouldn't I buy one of these?

so true. you don't have to own a track car to be a motorsports or car fan, which is all we truly have in common here.

take your time with this purchase, because it will be a huge one and consume alot of time and energy for you.

I didn't mean anything negative by my earlier comment. Just trying to emphasize that everyone has to start somewhere. We're all pretty young and have time to track a M3 but you notice how all of us don't. I think we all exclusive track piles. So join the club, buy a pile and drive it into the ground.

We're all just trying to help feersty, and i think you know that. I would have to agree that waiting until you realize exactly how much you're bringing to the table before committing to a car purchase would be the much smarter idea. i wish i did that before i decided to purchase the teg. I could've inherited the civic (which still runs like a gem) and not have had a car payment, but chose not to :hammer:. I know you're anxious about buying a car and getting into the 'scene' but some of these og's have also waited a little while and working for a while before deciding to purchase a nice car (ex: maeng - year w/sti, mike - years w/s2k, and rj - years w/miata and track teg -- well after about 70 other cars he went through). It's kinda different if you're looking for a track car - i'd look to spend as little money as possible for a good one -- get's expensive with all the mods / maintenance.

I, too, was anxious about buying a 'nice' car and now a 'nice' bike, but doing the numbers with real figures....kinda puts things in perspective, i need to live like i was in college ($150/mo for food and conservative with everything else) before i can make decision to buy a 'nice' car. Be patient with your car purchase, and like it was said before you don't need a "capable" (i put this in quotes b/c any car will do) to be an enthusiast. Keep coming out to the events man! We're all friends here and i'm sure that your car purchase will be one that you'll be happy with, just take your time Wink. Evaluate all your options and keep looking around like you have and read about the reviews. I say be patient and find a car you like - go for test drives too. I know i never really considered the 350z until i drove it....now it's on 'the list' as a possible purchase in the next few years.

Really, we're just trying to help, Feersty.

For example: My aborted SBC 944 project. I really, really wanted this. I mean, really bad. It is, in my mind, the quentissential definition of cool. Small car, great handling, great marque, rear mounted transaxle and a whole pile of cubes.

And really, for a reasonable price, only around 5-6 grand.

I can't afford it. I mean, I could go to the bank, borrow 6 thousand dollars, and have me and my (tomorrow) wife eat ramen noodles, peanut butter and GV Macaroni and Cheese for the next 3 years. We could have done it.

Instead, I put every POSSIBLE expense I could have with the car, combined it with my income (minus expenses) and said "Well then. Let's look at something else."

An M3 is gonna run the same way. That's part of the reason so many people modify cheap cars. You've got a low entry cost AND if something fucks up, you've got money to pay for it. We're just looking out for you. Nobody wants you in a buick (or an S-10). We all want to see you with a sporty ride.

you won't be disappointed with an EK once you toss in a new motor, trust me. crazy utility, dirt cheap parts, great gas mileage, reliable, you can pay cash for it (monthly payments suck ass)... ride that out for a few years (like i did) and then you'll likely be making more and able to afford something nicer.

you've got nothing to prove. please don't feel as if you do.

besides, if you get an M3, you won't want to track it once you start pushing the envelope. If you develop the kind of attachment to it that I have for my supra, tracking it will last a whole 2-4 events and suddenly you'll be making payments and looking for something that you can put into a wall and walk away from without worry. If you really want to get into it with no real strain here are my recommendations.
-cheap
-common
-underpowered
-easy to maintain
-most importantly, something that you won't get so attached to (read: not your dream car) and can allow yourself to wreck without any major hardship or heartache.
Just my thoughts. I tracked the supra at first. I love that car too much to wreck it and it has more power than I wanted when I first start on track. I cut my power in half, got a lighter chassis and beat the hell out of my 240. I maintained it and modified it, but it has been great to me and a ton of fun and hasn't really cost a lot. Even now I still am afraid to track the supra.

Reason #1 I sold the ITR.

I'd like to get another one eventually (CW please) but not for a while, and not as a track car.

yeah, i'd love to track a supra. Therefore, I'll eventually find a hardtop and proceed to track the hell out of it. But it won't be the one that I have right now and I plan to keep that one for as long as I can.

I already said get the 318! Tongue Are there any horse socks? Is anyone listening to me?

THOSE 318's are great, the race proven E30 chassis with all it's cheap parts, great build quality and reliability, but the much more updated twin cam engine and engine management used in the E36. That engine's actually WAY overbuilt, forged this and that, adjustable cam timing, and requires less maintenance than any other E30 engine. It's a cool package, a little unique, the mods on that one are great, it's a car I've often considered myself.... I just wouldn't know what to do with all that power!

Really though, if you want to get on track, get a car you can afford to track. That's all there is to it. If you come anywhere close to maxing your budget on the car, you won't have any left to play with it. Hell, half the guys here, myself included, have made this mistake and ended up selling their "better" car for.... well, a "better" car for their needs. Don't feel obligated to learn the lesson firsthand.

yes, that's Jess drinkin a PBR, she can't even hold it right. But her heart was in the right place.

late to the discussion, but anyways....
Don't buy your dream car right off the bat. It'll leave you with no hopes for later life.

Also, don't speculate too much before you know how much you'll make... in real money terms. It can be quite daunting with all your expenses. You just have to see it. No amount of predicting will do it.

Yes, living expenses add up fast. I probably spend $1000/mo between rent, utils, food, gas.
