Maybe I'm not old enough to understand that the 993 and previous are so much better....but I'll definately find out...I'm looking at buying an 86 911 from a buddy of mine, if the price is right.
I promise I will drive other cars before I choose.

you are correct. if that end starts coming around, it's gonna keep going and going. i forget when they corrected it, but they did and now they've almost overdone it.

i think zee Germans started to tame it around the 993 era. something like a rear suspension that had a toe curve that helped the lift-off oversteer.
but practically speaking, if someone like Aaron, who has no prior experience with a high powered rwd car, wanted to get into a porsche 911, i would think the 996 would be the best to start with.

Drive them and you'll get it. The 996 is too sanitized... its like a "toyota carrera". Part of the car's character is its eeeeevill handling characteristics, sweet air-cooled noises and round headlights
