Too bad Evan is wrasslin' bears in Montana 'cause I need a partner in hate.

Not sure why anyone is surprised by this. Apple has always historically exerted tight control over everything in their product cycle. Proprietary non-upgradable hardware, closed proprietary standards, etc etc. Which leads into one of my biggest problems with fanbois and the tech community at large, Apple is given a double standard where MS or a less stylish company would be railed for the same business practices.
Of course they are going to keep you from doign anything you want with your phone. Next up I imagine all of the "pwned" phones are going to get....pwned.

So, I tried out this app friday night, I tried screwing around with the configuration over 8 passes, twice the app got no data, once it started the run while I was still sitting at the tree, and it was 5-8 tenths off the slip every time it "worked".

Seems like a POS so far, but I am still going to try to get some measurements on rollout and such and plug them in, instead of guessing.

(but fwiw I do think its a pretty slick idea)

REED Wrote:so here is a little apple frustration that I'm passing along from my sister, about 2/3 years ago she bought her first macbook - has worked flawlessly since then. She gets a new iPod which now requires the newest version of iTunes. Except iTunes won't install on her version of OSX and Apple told her her macbook is not upgradable to the newest version of OSX. It wasn't a memory issue. I don't know if this is because hers might be pre-intel macbook.

either way, she is pissed - I don't recall any PC not being upgradable so that you can install a newer operating system.

iTunes would not install on my ex-gf's IBM ThinkPad. Just wouldnt. No real error messages, just wouldnt go on. New machine, fast and perfectly configured.

Then a couple of her friends lost their entire music collection (much of it bought on itunes) through an iTunes software crash. The solution from Apple support was to "buy them all again"

um...yeah

and Apples have never been very upgradable. This has been both good and bad. They abondon standards and technologies at the drop of a hat and move on to the newer and (sometimes) better thing, forcing the older users to buy new boxes. Hell, I remember when they were SCSI disks, only used Firewire, etc...

Just got an iphone on Sunday (where there was almost a fight in line...).

I am very, very happy with it. Haven't had a chance to use the GPS to get anywhere yet but I have played with it a little bit. What I'm really liking so far is Last.fm and Pandora. With the music on my old ipod I was getting a little starved for new music but with those it's recommending a lot of stuff that I like. And it's cool to have a radio station that pretty much plays what you want. Only downside is that I can't use them in the Pentagon (no reception).

I like the interface for the most part but I think the word suggestion needs more work. A coworker had a Verizon smartphone that did a much better job than my iphone did on that.

The other quibble I have is that I can't control the ipod without looking at the screen. With my old ipod I could work the controls while it was still in my pocket. I do like that I can set it to shuffle within any play list though.

I also downloaded the Facebook and Myspace apps. The fact that they allow you to upload pics directly from the phone is pretty handy. I'm usually too lazy to upload pics from my regular digicam.

Youtube is pretty slick on the phone too since they have an iphone specific interface. Too bad youporn doesn't work with it though Sad

So far, so good.

I find the word suggestions to be pretty good - I also thought it got much easier to work with the keyboard once you get acclimated.

You can play/pause the iPod by single clicking the inline mic, and you can skip to the next track by double clicking it.

I'm torn on whether to upgrade to the 3G, though. Not having a car, GPS doesn't matter, and I hear mixed reviews on AT&T's 3G network. I've only played with a friends once and it's significantly faster than Edge, but others say that it's only slightly less useless than it. More space would be huge, too.

Yeah I wouldn't say the word suggestion is bad, but I've seen a better implementation of it.

On this model I can't control the ipod without using the touch screen. I can double click on the home button to bring up the ipod controls without unlocking the phone but there is no way to use the external tactile controls. A minor annoyance I guess but I don't like having to take the iphone out everytime I want to skip a few songs. This is a big negative on the bike on the few times I want to listen to music.

If I were you Beej I probably wouldn't upgrade in this cycle, I'd wait till the next one comes out. Unless you're running out of space.

If you use the headphones that the phone came with, there's an inline microphone that also serves as an external button. Squeeze that bitch once and you pause; squeeze it twice and you go to the next track.

Ah ok, I didn't use the included headphones

the alum one? nah, we got the previous model though. Seeing that the alum one is now only $1k, I kinda wish I had it. No complaints though other than the razor sharp, wrist-slashing edges. :dunno: I don't know how they missed that. Other than the multi-tough pad.... anything else neato the alum does? How's the LED backlighting?

On a more somber note, our 800mhz G4 ibook seems to be on its death bed. I think it's all related to the power management. Has had trouble running off the battery for quite a while. So it's been doing well as a desktop/print/backup server since we got this MacBook. Now it's suddenly having big problems running off the wall adapter! Cry

The new MacBooks are pretty nice. I'm glad they finally put the backlit keyboard on the small laptops. Well, on the $1599 model anyway. The LED screens are brighter (I always thought the white/black MBs had dim screens) and should not dim over the years.

The multi-touch pad is cool once you get used to the swipe motions. I keep trying to demo the "rotate" motion for photos to customers, and inadvertently zoom in/out.

I think build quality is way up on the older laptops. The whole "brick" construction process is a huge advantage and feels much sturdier.

I picked up one of the new Jesusbooks on Black Friday (the $1299 one). I mfn' love multitouch so much that I try to do it b accident on other laptops. I just upgraded the hard drive to 500GB and it was pretty a total snap except that I didn't have a T6 torx screwdriver.

Well, Jess absolutely loves her new MacBook. Now I want one too - my new company isn't going to provide a laptop, and I need to buy something from either Apple or Dell before 30 January to take advantage of my old company's corporate discount.

Anyone have one of the new unibody MacBook Pros?

Looks like the Apple Store has a refurb unibody MacBook Pro for $1699. That's really a little more than I'd like to spend at this point (after just dropping $$$ on Jess' computer), but I may pull the trigger.

My rationale for getting the MacBook Pro is mostly just to have the bigger screen - I've done the iBook / Dell 700m thing already and really don't want another 13" squinter.
