Split this topic - back on track.
Why do people just post what they are thinking? Without thinking.

I have a workhorse of a desktop, which I use for video and image editing, but I also see the value in having a laptop. I would like to replace the one I'm losing, but I don't have a shit ton of money to spend (think <$500). I also consider myself a fairly avid traveler and I like to have something I can take with me for internet research and photo offload purposes. I'd like it to be light enough that I don't might carrying in a (backpacking) backpack, but I also don't want my primary screen to be a tiny little 8".

you coming to RJs for the party? i can bring the dv3t for comparison. my main goal for the thing was to get the maximum amount of computer for mobility while in a nice package for less than $800 (maximum reimbursement from my company with a program they have when purchasing any personal computer).

the dm3t and the dm3z appear to be pretty sweet for $600 and $500 respectivly - metal chassis, both under 4.25 lbs, and both less than 1.5" thick when closed.

Yeah, I plan to be at Turducken.

Rumor has it they might be letting us keep our laptop as a gesture of "good will". If that's the case, I might just buy the cheapest and smallest thing I can find to supplement.

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth

strong chance of that... seems to be common nowadays. what would they do with all those machines? we've been giving machines to the few we've let go over the past year or two.

So we do get to keep our laptops, plus a docking station and a 19" monitor. I guess that means I won't be buying a netbook any time soon, but will probably still get one before our trip... assuming I get a job. At that point, I figure I'll just buy the smallest and lightest thing out there that doesn't have an Atom processor.
