when unable to pay the full $2k, a difference of $1k does make quite a difference. think college budget, not post-grad budget.

I apologize for being blunt, but it is what it is. I've spent my share of time around high mileage rusty hondas, and they always turn out unforeseen problems that eat up your time, money and patience. In the end its not really worth it. At 200k miles the shocks, wheel bearings, brake calipers, suspension bushings, motor mounts, trans synchros, subframe welds, steering rack, and who knows what else are suspect and could eat up your project budget just keeping it on the road. I'm going to be a bit presumptuous about your budget based on the other civic you have, but I think you're underestimating the cost of body work and paint - do you have a garage to store and work on the car? I'm not sure if your neighbors will like bodywork in the parking lot. Not to mention the rust, which is a fucking cancer on those cars. Its more than a sand and bondo job, its going to require cutting out all the rust and welding new metal in. What you see on the outside is the tip of the iceberg, its a giant headache.
I'm not trying to be rude, but i've been there done that with those things. Good luck with whatever it is you want to do with it.

RJ, I totally agree with you. There are a lot of things to think about and i have. I checked everything out, and even things like the fuel pump relay have been replaced (which is a huge thing in these cars according to kaan). and i'm not worried about the body work and understand that it's not just sand and bondo. i'm prepared (and qualified, especially with the help of my friend who's a licensed body tech) to tackle every aspect of the body work. I can also get 90% of the parts you listed from my friends for dirt cheap. I planned on replacing the suspension anyhow (everything, including custom making my own components from a guy with a machine shop, to the bushings, struts, and springs). also, my friend is getting me a discount on some sweet paint (color to be disclosed at a later time ) and we're going to spray it in my dad's garage one weekend. plus, my neighbors don't care, our parking lot is only half full anyways.
Goodspeed, don't worry, it's gon be bawwwlin. once i get all the body work done, i'll reveal my paint scheme.

I applaud your dedication to the project, but I agree with RJ, there are a lot fo potential unforseen costs. I don't know your friends, but it seems like you are relying on them a LOT in this project (friend that's a body tech, friend getting you cheap parts, friend with a machine shop, friend getting you cheap paint). That's a lot of outside sources to rely on for deals that might not always come to fruition. Some friends want a throw back of some kind or something from you in the future, so that's something to keep in mind.

Shrug prove us all wrong and turn it into a show car with your buddies' help. I would personally try to negotiate the price down some, $2k seems like a lot for an old rustbucket that needs all kinds of work like that done.

Discount or not its still a lot of parts and supplies that have to be bought, and they cost money.
You have really lofty goals. I get it, because I had a lot of the same ideas... hence the warnings. Do yourself a favor and make a spreadsheet with your goals and all the costs involved (and be honest about the $$ amounts). You might be surprised. A 'restoration' of sorts, even with cheap parts and labor can easily run up $3-4k. Its not much better than building racecars
If you are dead set on a CRX I have a friend that has one that is in much, much better shape for around the same money - its for sale but not really advertised. If you're serious and have cash in hand I can put you in touch with him.

Are we done yet?
Seriously, if Taylor wants to take on a project let him.
Here is one way to look at it - you keep talking about how all the nicer cars you are looking at cost at least 2x as much money as the one that you are about to buy.
Your car:
2k for car
$600 for suspension
$200 to $300 for exhaust
$300 to $500 for tires and rims
$200 to fix that broken window
$300 to $500 in supplies for paint / body work (at the least if you want it to look good)
That is all cheap, assuming you don't run into other maintenance or inspection issues.
For the same 4 or 5k dollars, you could just buy a car that already has paint, a swapped engine, wheels, good tires and isn't all rusted out. It also won't take 100 hours of work to get it into good condition.
Why do people just post what they are thinking? Without thinking.

it's true and worth a whole lot more [in parts and time put in] than what i'd ask. needs new shock mounts and some interior cleanup and it's minty.

Mikes Civic is definitely clean and would be a much better way to spend your money. You could still make it a project, paint it the way you want, change up the suspension and wheels and such if you needed to.

I definitely understand wanting to do everything yourself, but 2k for that car is unrealistic dude. I would say part the 2 or 400 and look for something likes Mike's civic, save up the money and get something that is in much better condition. Its much better to spend the extra little dough up front, than be paying 2x later on. Dont waste your time on a rust-bucket. IF you do keep it despite the warnings of people far more experienced than you, than that is your decision.
Thats my advice, but good luck with the build and enjoy it along the way, put that wrench down when your feeling frustrated and come back to it another day, it will make the experience a ton more enjoyable.

Whatever...I know how this works. Good luck getting a buddy to help you. They might work on it for a day...maybe. Bodywork sucks to much to do it for free...and that car needs far to much. Good luck with it...hope it doesn't eat all your money.

the window is being fixed in the price, i think i included that in the original posting so i'm not worried about that. I'm welding my own exhaust, probably will just do an axle back to get a low burble for the sound (i like it a little quieter). my friend who is a body tech is my best friend, and is the one who helped with my motor swap, and spent 8 hrs with me trying to do my suspension on the civic. i'm not worried about getting help from him. he loves helping me, as i love helping him with his s13. and yes i know it's going to cost a lot in the long run. but, at the end of the day, it's going to be setup the way i want. not the way someone already has it setup. i love mike's car. i've only seen it in person once (when i picked up some lca's) but i'm not interested in a eg hatch. and again, it's not necessarily about the end goal for me...it's mostly about the journey there. and again, i don't want to buy one already swapped. i like the originality of the car. i don't think i'm ever going to convince anyone until it's done. so, we can continue this until the end of time, but the only thing that's going to make it stop is to see it done. as soon as i sell my car and get this car to my apt the body work is going to fly. so, thank you everyone for your warnings. i understand where everyone is coming from. if in fact, you are all so sure that i will regret it, then sit back knowing that in a couple months i'll be saying "you were all right."
