Given AOLs history of business decisions, you're making a great case proving my point

but hey, buy a Dell if you want. IMO there are better computers out there for the money and there is no reason to shop Dell except when the price is far less, and considering they are no longer the top computer reseller and loosing marketshare, the market agrees with me too

this is a pretty solid deal for a cheaper machine

email me if you want a $25 off coupon on top of that

$500 + shipping for a comparable new Dell
$450 + shipping for a lower specced Dell outlet

Your data is crap, mine is not.. Do you know exactly what was up with all 4000 of those machines? No. For all you know, 3999 of them could have been great, but 1 was bad and it happened to belong to a decision maker.

Your problem is your friendship causes you to place too high a value on Evan's opinion. You're all set to go and he comes in here and fucks everything up. Don't listen to him, he's cuckoo.

God... I wish I had back all the time I spent investigating issues that appeared to happen to only one person, but happened to the wrong person. The wrong thing breaks for an executive and suddenly you have 4 people digging into data for days, looking to prove it was an extreme case.

lol.... so Mikey making shit up is more trustworthy than the reliability and cost analysis that the IT departments did to make the decision

It ain't fanboyism if you've got a legitimate reason to appreciate the product. Everyone that has an opinion that differs from yours isn't a fanboy. Besides, Mike uses a Mac so I'm not sure how he qualifies.

Besides, we all know that IT cost analysis is shit. If they weren't, why has every company I've worked for used Dell?

It is fanboyism if you say "ignore everything else and buy brand X"

if you were shopping for a car and I told you to only buy a Chevrolet, dont even look at any other cars you would think I was nuts

Evan Wrote:anyway, Id just watch slickdeals for a good deal on machine and go from there. ...If you're looking to spend ~$500 the brand doesnt matter all that much, just get whatever is a good deal and plan to replace it with another $500 machine every 2 years.

I'm sorry but I can't seem to find where anyone said that. He wanted an opinion on Dell Outlet and he got one. I also added that Dell doesn't suck like you think. He can buy an HP if he wants, I didn't try to dissuade him. Well, I did try to dissuade him from listening to you but I'd do that regardless of topic... so there!

FWIW, I've found the deals on slickdeal, dealnews and fatwallet too restrictive. I usually want to upgrade something and it ends up adding 20% to the price. If you can find something that meets your specs, it's great but otherwise they kinda pigeonhole.

get the cheapest machine taht suits your needs, brand does not matter IMHO, all computer will suck to someone else. It is just like cars, someone has had things go wrong. If dell was SOOO shitty, then corporations wouldnt be using them. Same goes to HP, and so forth.

just do not get an eMachine.

If you say "I know xxxx out of those 4000 were in for repairs," your data is valid. Otherwise, my point is totally valid and your data is not.

:?: Again, what is Mikey making up? Would you like me to count the machines? Give you machine names and model numbers? Shit, I can probably rattle off a dozen IP addresses too. I'm going to ignore servers for now since we're talking about desktops, but I've had another 15 or so of them (1750, 1850, 1950, 2950, powervaults):

AOL
2 latitudes

Anystream
6 optiplexes.
5 latitudes.

Group Logic
3 optiplexes.
1 latitude.
3 dimensions.

Total? 20 machines.

I have never had a repair done on a dell. I have had them in sour states, but that's always due to me trying to get a Server OS on a home machine, mucking with boot settings, throwing in unsupported cards, or any of a million other things I shouldn't be doing.

I have had 3 HPs in that same time. 2 had to be sent in. 3 Macbook Pros, 1 had to be sent in. 15 Mac Minis, 4-5 have died.

I'm no Dell fanboy, but the data presented in my life has shown me they're quite reliable.

I've been around IT departments... Making a change as drastic as you're saying was made is most often not an educated decision... It's a handful of people who feel strongly that the change should be made, speaking up really loudly (or having a lot of clout), and the change is made.
