But yeah, please kids, 4g63 vs whatever those funny boxer engines are called isn't even a question.

it was an evo8, wasnt it? an instructor blew it up? and you're right, i dont think he was asking a 4g63/ej20 or ej25 question

And they failed on a hard day at the track? That makes me mad, hearing about a stock motor letting go at such a young age. Oh wait. They weren't stock? Their owners had actually done something to increase the power output of their vehicle? That is a total shame. I can't understand how an older, modified, tracked car could develop an engine problem.
Defensive much? Jeez dude. It's just a motor.

Apology up front if somehow a Evo8 or late model DSM is actually what "exploded."
heh. actually, they were EVOs. (And guys running OTC should know a thing or two about tuning an engine for a road course otherwise they either arent too bright or have no business being there)
Id need a couple pages to list all the busted DSMs Ive seen at the track Wink

Dont get so defensive when you made the reliability jab first.

in the newest issue of GRM an SVX placed 13th overall out of like 50 cars or something in the 2004 challenge. not bad at all for being stock with the exception of like a 100 shot of NOS, and upgraded springs/dampers.

sorry you have to sell such a rare bird Rex. im sure the it will find a loving home.

and Travis, chill man. you may have crank walk but at least it isn't a rotary. oops, did i say that out loud!?

Someone blew up an Evo8 and now I lose for their stupidity.

And no Evan. Reading comprehension owns you.
I said nothing makes you wish you were working on a DSM like the boxer engine found in a WRX. This has nothing to do with reliability, because please, we all know who loses that. This has everything to do with the pain in the ass that they are...I can change my plugs in about 4 minutes. Can you get yours done in 4 hours?

Your "what I saw at the track last week" stories have no bearing on real life.

And yeah scotty, if you think I get mad wait until Jack find out what you didn't say.

I have ~$2100 on my Capital One. That's the only non-school debt I have. It's the car, all my mods, and my engagement ring. So MM'ers can have the car for 2100 dollars. I'll probably be asking ~3 grand other places. Which, personally, considering the immaculate condition, and edmunds saying the car has a PP retail value of 2,441 (and a dealer retail in excess of 4 grand) I think 2100 is more than reasonable.

Anyway, this car is so damned cool. What I meant by "especially a subaru" was not to imply that subarus were unreliable, but rather that ANY awd car is an absolute bitch to work on, and a boxer engine (especially one this big) is not exactly a breeze to wrench. You pay for that low center of gravity and perfect balance. And after working on the rear-drive nissan, well, I'd rather get out of debt.

But the car exudes coolness. Digital climate controls, a hideaway radio (a panel removes itself to reveal the radio) the leather is in perfect condition, and the suade doesn't show any significant wear at all. Which is amazing. The car does have a problem: The sunroof doesn't open. The motor wirrs, but I think maybe the roof is off-track. The passengers have little power windows. It's so cool it's stupid. And power! Weee! It's not overwhelming power, but it is smooth, and right there right now. So smooth. I left my digital camera at my future father-in-law's house, so I'll retrieve it when I go up there this week, to do a fluid change. I figure I'll flush the tranny and radiator, and give it an oil change, maybe wash it. Then I'll have pictures to post. But really, picture the car I first posted with a dented passenger fender and no ground effects, and that's my car.

I also got an 89 Toyota Camry that is going to be my beater. It runs, has power windows and cruise control, a blown front strut, and smells like a camels ass.

Now, I'm sure you're all wondering how I got these two cars for such a reasonable price. Well, I saw this SVX in the Valley Trader, and decided to call about it, for the hell of it. My friend Brian has always wanted one, and I'm always keeping an eye out for shit. So I call, the asking price for the car is really reasonable, definitely something Brian could afford, so I thought I could spot him the money, and he could have one of his dream cars. So I told her I couldn't come look at the car until sunday, but that I could actually probably take it then. SO after talking, she said, "Look, my landlord wants these cars gone. You come sunday and bring a trailer, and you can have it." Have it?, I say. "Yeah, just come take it. You can have it for free."

So, I did. She said I didn't want the Camry. She'd hit 4 deer with it, and had left a bag of trash in the trunk...since november. Oh, did I mention she's a Chef? Yeah. Hence the camel-ass smell.

But I told her if it ran I'd take it, and so after spending 2 hours trying to jump the Superbru, I went to autozone and bought a new battery. It started right up, without a bit of hesitation. Then we jumped the Camry. By the sound of it, it needed an exhaust in addition to a strut, but it did run, and the 3SGE is a pretty indestructable engine so I thought "What the hell" and drove it, with expired inspection and tags, and one headlight pointing to the ground, from Flint Hill, VA to Winchester.

Julie thinks I'm out of my mind, but her dad thinks I'm the coolest dude since the Fonz. But it'll be nice to have a car to drive in the winter, and to generally beat the shit out of and not care about. And I mean shit, the Camry had a pioneer head unit in it, and the junkyard was going to CHARGE HER 80 DOLLARS to remove it!

I'll take it for free!

And that, my friends, is how it all went down.

Oh, and Travis, Crankwalk is not something that happens to every car. Sure, it CAN happen to any car, but don't you think it's kind of odd that I've never heard of a car OTHER than a DSM have a walking crank? I had a DSM, too. I loved it. It was awesome and I wish I'd never sold it. Nobody is hating on your car, no need to be so defensive.

BTW, if you put up a for-sale ad in Mid-Atlantic on NASIOC.com you will probably find someone willing to buy it for $3K.

You think? I was also gonna try DragVA and Subaru-SVX.net

3 grand would get me out of debt, finish my suspension, and get me more than halfway to turbocharged.

ah, it sounded like you meant reliability.

I think you would be surprised how easy a subaru engine is to work on. Being a heavy engineering company, they have really made a lot of things easy to work on. Even things like oil filter placement are very well thought out (as opposed to my miata which has a bunch of crap under the filter so oil just goes all over it)
Plugs are much easier than you would think. not 4 minutes, more in the neighborhood of 30. And since they are pratinum I only have to do it every 60k Smile
