Some progress since the last post -
Gas tank modification to clear the carbamaphone linkage and relocate the fuel tap - the gas tank is from a CB500, so it doesnt exactly bolt up. Battery tray Brake fruid reservoir mount and exhaust hangar (home depot racing supply) Some sweet new air filters Building the wiring harness: Supposedly all of this shit fits in the headlight bucket... I like this bike because it has lots of built in PBR holders Doesnt look like much but its ready for the starter relay, voltage regulator and rectifier - waiting on them in the mail from ebay. Whats left? Oil tank went out for powdercoat last week and should be done soon. Wire in relays for the headlight and ignition coils (there arent any stock), make a license plate bracket, buy ignition coils/electronic ignition plate (I am tossing the stock points ignition - so sad ), buy a front brake line, have the gas tank cleaned, coated inside and painted, and of course a few other little odds and ends. Getting ever closer...

Main wiring loom is just about done - kill/starter switch wired in and some connectors replaced - I've got 12V at the ignition coils and starter relay
Hooray lights! And the 'rats nest' is done. Still need a headlight switch and a few other bits, next week I'm going to order ignition coils and my oil tank should be done. Oil + spark = hopefully a running motorbike!

License plate/brake light mount done, and oil tank back from the powdercoater - looks fantastic
- Dropped off some parts at a machine shop to get the rear brake hooked up, need some aluminum bushings made. - Should have a front brake line sometime next week - ignition parts on the way (coils, wires, plugs). Hopefully, now that I've got something to put the oil in, and I'll have ignition, I can fire it up hock: And if I have brakes, I could ride it too! Once thats done... few more wiring tasks to do - I want to clean up the starter relay wiring, wire in relays for the ignition coils and headlight, add a fuse box (they didnt have fuseboxes in 1971 I guess), and hook up the voltage regulator.

More progress!
Rear brake hardware is all sorted out and brake works - at least, in the garage... I hope I have enough leverage on the road but if not I can always change it The problem this was trying to solve is locating the rod end inside the stock drum brake lever - its perfect, Allied Machine in Falls Church did the work for me. Any concerns I had about the LED brake light not putting out enough oontz are gone.... And since Phil's CB400 is living in my garage... why not see what the tank looks like? Hmm... fuel tap in the right place Plenty of handlebar clearance Mounts right up front and back Loads of room under the tank for coils, wiring, etc. The problem is clearance for the carbamaphone slides - I need another 3/4" of clearance for these suckers, and its right up against the side of the tank. I'm going to take a closer look at it, and if its doable then I'm going with the CB400 tank - if it needs cutting and welding I'll take it out to piper and talk it over.

Very cool. You should ride this thing out to cali. The ass pounding would suck but the stories should last you a lifetime.

i love the rear 3/4 view that shows off the "bobtail" kind of look. such a simple, clean bike.

Its christmas time in hollis queens! All of my ignition bits and some misc honda parts arrived. Yay!
Filled it up with oil and after laying into the starter for about a minute, I've got oil pressure And a brake line Coils mounted... Mechanical ignition advance :lol: All finished up The spark plug wires have to be cut to length, and then I need to set the ignition timing.... so at some point this week or next I'm gonna see if she runs hock:

+1 for Allied Machine Works. Those guys are real laid back and have done some work for me including a CZ swing arm bolt which I thought they would never find the proper thread for, but for some reason they had it and they did it same day for cheap.

Ok, after seeing this: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://dotheton.com/index.php?topic=3410.0">http://dotheton.com/index.php?topic=3410.0</a><!-- m -->
I'm thinking :!: Why didnt I think of that? Probably because I'd rather obfuscate the issue by adding complexity, rather than using stock honda components - which is generally the goal for this project as stock parts are generally easy to find and replace. I had the rod end mount cut and relocated (welded) on the brake pedal to pull the threaded rod properly. I'm not 100% happy with the amount of leverage on the rear brake (too much travel in the pedal, and potential clearance issues), and I'm also not 100% happy with the brake pedal as it came from a crashed bike and half the pedal is ground down. So, I'll find another brake pedal and re-tool the solution, and chalk it up to a learning experience to step back and look for the simple solution. For the rear of the brake (the lever pull at the drum) i am 100% happy with it - so that part is good.

Made a test light so I can set the ignition timing. I didnt actually do anything with it though... maybe tomorrow... and I havent put together the ignition wires yet either.
The goons at cell pho... er radio shack had no idea what a test light is. Oh well....
