"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth

But no really - what makes a Miata so much more practical?

if you cant see why a 4 wheeled vehicle with a roof, a passenger seat,a trunk,a/c and a heater is more practical than a motorcycle, then I really cant help you.
Its not my intention to get in a pissing match of which is better, sorry to make you all butthurt over it.

I think it's more about what makes a 2nd and 3rd Miata practical versus having a motorcycle.

Well... a fair comparison would be about having more than 1-2 vehicles in general. Just like you have a truck for towing, a car for DD (right?), a race car and car(s) that sit... others have 3 bikes. One for track, one for street and one as a project. It's the fact that you've gone over and above that 3 vehicle for 3 purposes that RJ was referring to. A comparable behavior for RJ would be to have motorcycles that serve all those purposes plus some that sit. Having a Miata race car and street car makes sense, it's the farm he was talking about.

Andrew's crazy if he's arguing that a motorcycle is as practical as a Miata. I'm sure he is but most sane people agree that's not in question. Really it's about the practicality of owning one versus other as your "toys" and they're pretty darn close.

well, that wasnt even close to what ginger was saying, but ill play along.

a "project" bike isnt any different than the 90 I have other than my 90 actually runs, and is useful as a backup vehicle, all my other vehicles have purposes, and the miata I did just sell I made money off of since RJ thinks that means something?

If you're cleaning them up and turning a profit on 'em then it makes a lot more sense than if they're just sitting around as yard ornaments or bottomless black holes for your checking account to funnel into.

I will agree that they are similar (although I still think having a backup running car is a lot more practical than having a backup old motorcycle that doesnt run) which is kind of my whole point all along.
I get shit about having a bunch of miatas so I was simply pointing out the irony here and that collecting old busted motorcycles is certainly no better.
But the motorcycle crybabies got all butthurt and made the thread serious.

No, you're right, that wasn't what I was saying. And I'm not butthurt.

I've got a heated jacket, water proof gear, and lots of luggage [and these aren't like, exclusive options to new motorcycles]. When it comes down to it, what makes a Miata SO much more practical? You might have preference to be warm and dry in your drop top... but there aren't really that many days a year that I can't ride at all. That's pretty much all I see as the practicality difference.

The ability to take your woman out on a date without having to buy her an Aerostich suit to go over her little black dress is a pretty nice feature.

I'm just trying to say, and really, I'll cough up that I keep my car around for a couple reasons, that motorcycles aren't as impractical as everybody likes to talk about.

There isn't really that much I can't, or don't, do with my bike.
