Why not buy the cheapest beater you can find and put the rest of the money into savings towards the Vette?
When it comes to Ryan Jenkins, the story ends with me putting him in the wall.

I think the S2K is a great sports car and I'm sure it would be lots of fun, but the way I see it you may end up wanting more...
It would probably be the worst winter car ever (how would you get to work?), not to mention, like Mike said, they are expensive to modify. The way I see it, with the WRX, you get to experience several new things...AWD and turbo to name a few. It would be a perfect all weather street car and potent auto-x competitor
I vote Subaru just based off pure practicality. I really enjoy having a sedan to haul stuff/people around and the massive amount of information and parts available for these cars is quite a convenience. If you want to save some money and buy used parts you can usually find exactly what you want within a week. As far as the transmission being fragile, if you abuse it... it probably won't last. If you limit yourself to 300 hp and not clutch drop at every stoplight you'll be just fine.
I would really like to check out an older M3 though.. I've heard good things.

I'm with stupid
Really though, the 240sx sounds like a good way to go. But if you really insist on spending the $$, S2k would be my top pick on there.... they're really in the mid-teens now? I gotta check that
*edit* pssh... they're not. Are you really serious about your 14.5k cap?

in two years, i haven't gotten to work a total of 2 days. on both those days, nothing short of a plow would have gotten me in. since owning the S, i have completely written off the "i won't buy x car because it won't get me to work in the snow."
ryan, now that i see you planning on buying a vette in a year, i change my answer to something cheap that you can toy with.

I voted for the WRX b/c it is something different, you can get one and have some money left over, and it is incredibly practical.
However, if you would really like to buy the vette soon, you really might consider buying something cheaper (S13 240, mk3 supra, E36 325, etc) and just having some fun there and saving up the money for the vette.

Cool, I just know that he doesn't drive his Supra in the snow so I figured the lighter S2k wouldn't be any better in the snow
i'm sure it's worse, but 1-2 days of HAVING to work from home per year shouldn't affect a car purchase.

I won't be buying some cheap ass beater to drive around. People have asked me before why I haven't gotten a beater and kept the supra parked and its just not something I want to do. I didn't buy the car to let it be parked. Also, I'm at a point in my life where cars are more important to me than they may ever be, so I'm not going to waste time in some shitbox. It won't make me happy and I'll just end up selling it in a month. I have to drive something I like.
The vette may be a year or so down the road, but that doesn't mean I won't own something fun now. Not driving in the snow is not a big deal for me, I've never owned a car that was snow worthy so it's nothing new. My managers will come pick me up if the weather is really bad.
Channing, look around man, I've found 7 s2000s right now in virginia alone (2 in roanoke) with under 70k miles and $15,000 or under. They are out there, just gotta look for them.

i voted LS1, but i want to change it to e36 M3. It has always been my unreachable affordable dream car. Finding one with good mileage and good care in your price range shouldn't be too much of an issue.
my actual vote would go for financing a C5

What if the S2000 was your only car, does this hold true? Was the Civic in disrepair on these days?

Ryan, what about an FD, maybe with an LS1? I've seen several FD's hovering around the 14-15k mark online, and I've even seen LS1 swapped FDs for mid 14's. Not to mention LS1 swapped FCs are significantly cheaper, as in under 10. It would be the Vette motor in a fantastic chassis, and it would definitely be something unique and something you haven't had in the past.

Most of the LS1 FD's that i've seen do away with a/c and need some "finishing" of sorts.
If you want a stock engined FD.... better budget $4-5k for another engine because it'll blow up at some point.

I've also just noticed that you've owned some of the one of the 'signature' cars from Japan (Toyota Supra) and the US (Chevy Camero)...time to try Europe (BMW M3)

From what I understand, this is illegal, due to vehicle emissions regulations, at least for road cars.

Nope.
Engine just has to be as new (or newer) than the chassis.
