Current students don't post on here because I think they naturally feel detached from the club. They are all freshmen, who don't have their cars with them, and as freshmen I'm sure they have more "important" things to do than spend weekends at the track. You and I might see it differently, but its up to them to decide what they want to do. IMO we have always done a pretty good job of doing a good presentation at the first meeting, telling them what we're about and how to get involved.
But we're not going to become their parents or play good cop bad cop with them, if they choose not to participate, even after a little pressuring here and there, thats their choice. We always tell them that we always have rides available to any and all events, it couldn't be easier to get involved, but they largely don't. Traditionally this is the type of club where you get more involved as you get older anyways. Also I'm sure drama like this scares them off. When people are new to a club they want to feel welcomed, they don't want to be dissected and ridiculed over years old pent up emotions. In each and every "hey everybody I'm new here" thread involving a new student, there has always been at least one negative remark or deriding comment. I think we should all just chill out.

Are what you guys really trying to accomplish here is to let anyone be in the club, but the officers should be actively pursuing some form of motorsports - be it autox, track days, drag racing, karting, etc? That seems to be what I'm getting out of it. I know I personally have never been to anything other than a dragstrip, and only to one autocross to watch...but I still had a good time in the club - and once I am on my feet a little more, I expect to break into the hobby a bit more, when it's more affordable for me, and I have a better place for all the prep-work that has to take place to go to a track. I think that's the biggest thing the people at JMU are lacking. First, they only have one car there, and they can't have it torn apart in the parking lot of P-run for two or three days while they're trying to get something together, or waiting on a part to come in so they can make it to a track day. Of course, flagging and setup, and whatever else can still be done, or just going to watch for the fun of it - but I dont think anyone can blame anyone for not actually participating in whatever motorsport - it's just too much of a pain in the ass to prepare, or worse, have to fix something when you broke it sliding into a curb at an autox or something.

If the causes were low student participation in motorsports has more to do with economics or whatever, that's understandable.

I dont think the idea was to ever say the alumni were douches. You guys are all awesome ( opinionated but awesome ) meeting pretty much all of you first hand is a completely different experience than here on the forum. You are all very cool in person and you have plenty to teach all of us. (expect me) hahah

I think current students read things like this, and see all the pressure attempting to be put on them to do things our way, and they in turn run away. We just need to let them go at their own pace. Some people may come in as freshmen and genuinely not like going to the track. But you know what? Thats ok. Because as long as THEY enjoy the club THEIR way, thats what its all about. And hey, I bet by their senior year they'd be track addicts anyways. The OG-internet douche thing is largely gone, but it does flare up every now and then . As Blair said you're all much much better in person. Yes the economics of it all make it very hard for some to actively participate right away. We all just need to relax, I think half the time we are making problems and issues out of thin air, we're a great club just the way we are and we all need to realize that. We'll just continue making it more of a great club.

Hello MMotorsports guys.
I'm a member who just joined two days ago. I've been posting about a car that Just bougt E30 that is a junker. I won't be able to attend many events, and will probably be an outlier to your society. My involvement will be small, while my need for help, input and knowledge is great. The forum has been welcoming to me. The club guys that I know (Peter, Channing, Shaun) are great guys and fun to hang out with. I've even got an offer for a free or traded removable racing steering wheel for my BMW already. Two days folks. That's awesome. Here's something interesting. Folks who have been to races, think that it's great fun. I tend to agree. I raced a Prelude one time and came in last in the group. Still fun. Someone who is new to the club might find it intimidating, or just WAY to far down the road to think about right now. Most of the reason people join clubs is for friendship and fun. I've had more fun working on cars for hours with friends, making parts for cars, painting parts, brainstorming, planning, and talking about cars.... than I have at a racetrack. In fact, I think you'll all agree that you work on your car for 10 hours for every hour at the racetrack. The forum gives me a place to goof off at work or between classes, talk about cars, and then make plans to work on them. The forum is no more hostile than fark.com or any other website that has a forum "feel". Even the southern flyfishers forum, or the jeepin.com forum, or the quadratec.com forum can be hostile. Try going to the reddrumtackle.com forum and asking "how's the bait situation down there at the beach this week". They will explode with fists of internet fury. However.... when the MMsports folks all become friends you are quicker to say.... you will surely die, or your idea sucks you moron. It's a thing that FRIENDS can do. This is a forum FULL of that, and newbies might be intimidated if they don't realize what's going on with the teasing. Lightening up might be a good idea. Inviting new members to come over and work on cars is a good idea. Making friends with new members is a better idea. Encouraging new members is the best idea. Also, dont' worry about the alum. They are old and they're getting a little senile. Dan JMU Gradutate JMU Graduate Student Friend to MMotorsports Noob[/b]

Plain and simple... the top of our website and forum says what we are about... if you missed it... read it.
We didnt start this club to produce a bunch of car show dyno queens. That was never the intention. It is true, we all used to lean the seat back and cruise the campus! We got together and wanted more. We went to the track! We learned how track events opperate, how to drive (some of us), how to build and inspect safe cars! ONE drivers education event, ONE autox or autox school will automatically (if you are really there to learn) will teach you to drive faster and safer. Faster on the track... safer EVERYWHERE. The car show was developed to be a group bonding experience, a chance to have the student body see us out in the open and in a positive light, AND to let the university know we do safe constructive things. Very few people outside of the OGs know what we went through to get the club started. The motorcycle club had an easier time getting started with the university than we did. we are ALWAYS being watched. I wouldnt be suprised if someone from the university safety group didnt watch this forum! We (alumni) hate on each other just as much as we hate on the students. Can anyone in the student body tell me where the "mom" jokes started? Can you tell me where the "sister" jokes started? You all have an open invitation to the track. If you want to talk to me (probably the biggest asshole and overly opinionated person), I'm in the tech shed! If you want to get to know us, invite us to JMU for something... other than the car show, because the car show we expect to happen no matter what! its a tradition... just like the mom jokes... and we STARTED IT... so of course we want to see it happen... we will help... we will be critical... we will attend! If you dont want to be involved in motorsports... start Madison Stunnaz or something... feel the pain we did trying to get things going... understand why we have the passion we do... the opinions we do. stop being a bunch of silver spoon mommas boys with bloody vaginas and be proactive... be proactive in the club... and in developing relationships inside this club.

This is the biggest problem concerning OG-student relations. Most of you seem to think that we are only recruiting ricers etc and/or that we are fostering such behavior. NOT AT ALL. The new people in the club are real car people. They really care about cars and they aren't in it for the image. Please read my earlier posts about new people and the track, I think I explained everything pretty well before. New people aren't going to be motivated if they are put-down before they even join. Theres a HELL of a lot between a hardcore track enthusiast and someone who takes an interest in rollin' in their caddy on dubs. Thats what we are currently. We're in between, we're fine with that, but we ARE doing our best to get people to lean towards the track. Please, I invite everyone to come to a meeting to see what is really going on. Man this is ridiculous, lets all stop posting in this trhead for a while or never again

Oh and RJ, horses are MUCH more expensive than OUR cars (not ALL race cars, but at our level, more expensive). A lady that use to b in my office has a daugher that's been into horses since she was 8 and now's a Freshman in college, to hear how much those damn tall dogs cost to begin with not to mention all the gear/crap you need to compete + keeping them fed/healthy :head-a-splode: She was spending about 2x as much as I was spending on the mustang.

if you are a current student here are some important club questions!
1. What is a widow maker? 2. Who made the first widow maker? 3. Where was the first widow maker made? 4. At this years Turducken/Christmas party what did we do to the widow makers? ................................... we have traditions that we follow, we hold close to us, we love! Rex, email me your paper on the history of MM please! we need to have that posted somewhere! a sticky even!
