Andy is dead on, sounds like a "blend door" problem. In the XR, it was a vacuum operated door. The diaphragm for the vacuum "motor" failed, so it couldn't move the door. In addition to a poor idle (due to the leak) the car would blow air proportionate to the speed I was traveling.
