So much still needs to be done. We are 95% of the way to making it run reliably, but we still have 40% of the way to go.

1. get cooling system

2. get spare carbs for the correct bike, or fashion some way to make the other (clean) set work. I like option #2 best. But option #1 is ok too. Or we can do option null, which is clean the set we've got.

a) get another carb boot, to replace heater hose

3. The fuel pump is self-regulating, so there is no reason for the tank to be on the floor and not on the frame.

a) route the harness properly to allow for the gas tank to be installed

4. Fashion an enrichening circuit lever. Seriously, using carb cleaner as a choke is not a very practical solution.

once these are complete, Goal B will be reached: reliable running. Then it will be time to make some serious plans.

Well, we did some more work today.

We started by dissecting a little more of the wiring harness; no pics because they all look the same right now. We're left with an "ignition harness" and are properly set up to create an "auxilury harness" which will serve to get things lit up... literally.

Next up was more trimming - this of the metal kind. It was time to abbreviate the subframe. The whole theme of the bike is minimalism, so off came the passenger pegs, the passenger section of the subframe, and the back section of the fender (which actually ended up coming all off).

But we wanted to really feel like we accomplished something - so we started it up and go it to idle on it's own. The carbs leave a little something to be desired, but they're getting the trick done for now. They'll need a rebuild since all the complication with the wrong year sets and all left us with a clean set that doesn't fit... but for now, whatever.

And then we mocked up the bodywork I had sitting around.





The seat was in the trunk of my car which wasn't around, but I picked it up and it's due for some trimming, too. I promise a full "working" mock up when I'm done.

But what's a day without power tools? Phil was practically looking for an excuse to buy a grinder, so when we went out to pick up fuses he came home with a nice little rotational wheel of fury.

I've got a list of what needs to be done to get it road worthy... and it's not as long as you might expect. I'll try and post that up tomorrow.

My only recommendation - put those clipons below the upper triple. You look like you're riding a Bimmer you're sitting so upright.

It should be noted that this project bike represents a major accomplishment in my life. I now own 3 kind of functioning examples of 3 bikes I'd like to own in the future if they didn't suck in the ways that they do now. And the VFR will eventually have to become something better because nobody will give me a decent dollar for it.

I got working carrrrburetors, don't ask how. I also got a complete and, theoretically, functioning cooling system. I tested the carbs and the bike ran so it was time to kick into overgear. Phil came over on Sunday and he cleaned up the wiring harness (and installed a battery box) while I fabbed up a bad mount for the oil cooler, broke RJ's dremel, mounted the cooling system, and, uhm, did something else. I forget what, though.
