Sounds like something is not right with the shifter cables.... can you watch them under the hood while someone shifts the gears and make sure it engages 5th all the way?

When I crumbled the front end of my car, shit got pushed back and it was very hard to put it in the gears. My cables werer being pushed down upon so it was a pain in the ass while I drove it to the shop.
