Eh but back then the PS2 had several things going for it that the PS3 will not. Number one, it was not 25-50% more expensive than the competition. The PS2 also came out before the XBox. The PS2 also had a few more exclusive first party titles that the PS3 won't have.
Remember Japan used to be overwhelmingly Nintendo land but Nintendo f-ed up with the Nintendo 64 (started believing their own hype, didn't pay heed to the competition...). Sony is in the same position now that Nintendo was in before the N64, except that Sony is charging A LOT more for their system.
Here's an appropriately arrogant quote (pride goeth before the fall):
Quote:"We have built up a certain brand equity over time since the launch of PlayStation in 1995 and PS2 in 2000 that the first five million are going to buy it [the PS3], whatever it is, even if it didn't have games." David Reeves, CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe.

Yeah, I don't even pay any attention to Nintendo..they seem to of secluded themselves to the little kid/fantasy geek market. I think brand loyalty is extremely strong in Japan, when I went there I saw nothing but Sony products, and probably hundreds of games for PS2 that I have never seen before or since. That arrogant quote is definately wrong for the American market (I hope it blows up in their face) but still, when it comes to Japan I wouldn't be surprised if its going to be accurate.

And God played New Super Mario Brothers on the DS, and he saw that it was VERY good.
If the DS is any indication of Nintendo's future direction, then I Am A Nintendo Fanboy, And You Should Be Too.

But it contradicts everything you said about Nintendo. The DS is one of the first (probably the first) portables to begin to break into that elusive "Mom And Dad" market, something Sony couldn't do with no competition, detailed instructions, and a map. The Wii is set to be very similar in it's execution.
And cheebus, man, the projected price for a PS3? Thanks but, uh, I'll take a DS, A 360, a Wii and a nice dinner instead.

Same here. You're forgetting that Japanese people are f*ckin crazy though haha. Well I'm just not a fan of Nintendo. From my perspective they're shrinking their customer base. Right now it looks like they are largely dependent on continually rejuvinating their hit games of last century. Personally I grew out of those games like a lot of other people, but I know they still have a huge fan base. Sure they do support some more serious game titles, but those same games are played significantly more on other consoles. I just think that in time interest in those games will be lost among consumers and they'll be making products solely for the under 13 year old segment. I just haven't taken them seriously in years, thats all

Bah, you best be prepared to take 'em seriously, son! Free online gaming, classing gaming downloads on the Wii virtual machines, 802.11 connectivity, and a pretty kick-ass list of games, now that Nintendo has finally learned how to let people other than nintendo make games for nintendo products.
Only thing it won't do is service you sexually, and given some of the PC Hentai stuff that's come out of that little island, give that time and you might be surprised.

For real. If you want to see rows upon rows of teen schoolgirl porn in a family oriented department store, go to Japan. Trust me.
you guys write a lot, but i think i can already guess what most people are saying...
g, you forgot their OG technological innovation that failed. beta. a videotape that was far beter than VHS as far as quality but they refused to let anyone else have beta, so it failed.
regardless, i like sony products that allow you to see things, ie: TV's, dvd players, cameras, monitors, etc. my parents had a really old Sony 20" TV that i remember watching sesame street on when i was a little kid and the tv died the year i went to college. i bought a sony wega tv our sophomore year and its survived moves almost every year and the picture still is crisp. i love my sony flat screen computer monitor and i love my tiny sony cybershot digital camera which i constantly get asked about by strangers. however, i think their stereo equipment is junk. i've never been pleased with their receivers or speakers and i think they lack ample power to make a home theater come alive.
as for their playstation lineup, i liked my ps1, still like my ps2 and will probably buy a ps3, but not until their prices drop. i doubt they'll disappoint, but who knows...

I really really like my XB0X 360, especially if you've got the audio/video hardware to support its capabilities.
I'll probably get a PS3 just to have one, but definitely not right away. I'd like to see how much different it is from the 360, and if it's not, I'll probably leave it on the shelf. I, like most people, could give two shits about Blu Ray technology. DVD / 1080 HD quality is fine for me.
The Wii I can not see myself owning. That controller where you have to like act out motions in golf games or shooting games or whatever looks completely stupid; I'm far too lazy to be that active while playing a video game, with a HUGE exception being DDR =p

Basically, Sony cripples its electronic products because it doesn't want people to violate the copyright of any of the media they own. They've jealously created a bunch of closed, propietary standards so that they and they alone could control all of the content. And of course consumers have promptly ignored them. but you still support Apple, who has always and will always create closed standards, force changes on its userbase, abandon legacy users, controll all content, how you interact with it, and on and on, all exponentially worse than Sony.
I guess bastard companies are relative to how trendy their products are?
PS- every peice of Sony electronics I have ever owned has been a colossal pile of shit. 2 dvd players, expensive DD reciever, car cd players, etc. All broke in an unusually short amount of time. Panasonic, JVC or Samsung get my money for electronics (or even one of the cheap tiawanese brands)

The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth

I guess bastard companies are relative to how trendy their products are? Well the difference is that Apple has actually executed well on some of its products where Sony has not only been a bastard company, but executed poorly (PS2 being the notable exception) on the products being discussed here.
Still, the fact that they don't license the Fairplay DRM scheme leaves them vulnerable to someone coming along, executing better, and destroying their business. If someone with enough money and brains does that they could be in big trouble. The trick is that they'd have to have to one-two punch of content sales (music & video) and killer app hardware at the same time.
Honestly, I think Apple is almost as evil as Microsoft, its just that they aren't as strong as Microsoft so they can't do as much evil stuff. I think if Apple had some more rope they'd probably find a way to hang themselves with something stupid. They're already sending cease and desist letters to companies that use the word "Pod" in their product names. Then there's the whole 'suing the press because they leaked our product plans' thing.
