Hahaha I did find the picture kind of ironic. Ferrari's mightiest cars in their natural environment: on a trailer.

Yeah, I just can't bring myself to get excited about a Ferrari. I mean, a Porsche or a sport BMW or a Vette or something like that, hell yeah! Cuz I might, you know, someday drive one. Or maybe even own one!

Ferrari? Nope. Not so much.

I feel the same way about those Panera Panini Pogostick things. Who cares? Ooooh! It's made out of carbon fiber! Whoopdie shit, I've got better things to spend a million bucks on.

Like a new house, and a vette for every day of the week.

Haha, its the sexiness, the heritage, the price, the rarity, the SOUND that gets people excited, even if only 1% of such people can actually buy one. I love them cause they are beautiful machines, but i'll never own one. I'll just own some car thats faster Big Grin

Ferraris do have a mystique and passion about them but the price actually makes me laugh at them in a way because for the price there are a lot of other sports cars that can blow them into the weeds. But then again Ferrari is not so much about absolute performance as it is the confluence of style, passion, and exclusivity.

Unfortunately this results in a lot of pretentious boulevard-pimpin' pricks driving the cars like grandmas and keeping 'em garaged 360 days a year but whatever. In contrast there are certainly Ferrari owners out there that appreciate the considerable racing pedigree. I can certainly appreciate that they've been totally committed to Formula 1, even when they had an almost 20 year dry spell.

For me the real reason I don't really like Ferrari a whole lot as a company is their long history of asshole behavior towards their customers and racing competitors. Ol' Enzo famously got the last round of the World GT championship cancelled so the Shelby Coupe couldn't win and of course Ford almost bought Ferrari out only to have Enzo renege at the last minute. I've read before that the snub was partially responsible for the birth of the GT40. Then there was the tractor company owner Ferrucio Lamborghini, who was so pissed off at the way Ferrari treated him when he was trying to get his car serviced that he made his own damned sports car company. I have a few more stories from more recently (if you want to hear them) but you get the point.

In some ways Ferrari's assholish ways make them charming, the same way a sexy woman with a bad temper is charming. But you wouldn't want to marry her.

Rex you shouldn't dislike Ferraris because you can't drive them though. I'm sure you could finagle your way into driving a 308 or even a 348 or 355 if you tried...

Thats true, hell a new Z06 will blow the doors off many Ferrari's for a fraction of the cost, but I think Jeremy Clarkson put it best...no matter the performance, theres nothing quite like a Ferrari, they are in a league of their own in a way. I think thats why he is so in love with the F430, its just a fantastic car in every way...atleast, if there was no Z06 around. But those cars I guess don't have quite the same amount of passion and panache behind them. And they don't sound as good either

I like Lamborghini as well, but to be honest they just seem boring compared to Ferrari's. To me they are brute and blunt, very business like supercars. Thats just because there isn't the same focus on history as there is with Ferrari

I can guarantee the Corvette crew is as passionate or more passionate than anyone at Ferrari. After all they've been building the Corvette for about a half century and they actually have a factory Corvette racing program. And the Corvette is the sole standard bearer for American performance although now we have the Viper and Saleen.

One thing I find funny is that every now and then when people are slagging on Honduh they'll say other companies have more racing heritage and they'll say Lamborghini. Lamborghini? They have almost zero racing pedigree! Lamborghini has always been about GT-type supercars and has never been into racing. Even today I don't think I could go for a Gallardo over a 430 (if given the choice). I certainly couldn't pic a Gallardo over a 430 Challenge.

So you dont look at hot women?
You dont like racecars or watch racing?
You dont like the sound of ferraris?
you dont appreciate the engineering?

Paying $200k for an automobile makes me sick. But that doesnt mean I dont appreciate them for being fantastic machines

it's kind of funny, I always thought the opposite of them. if i had to put neon lime green paint on a supercar? it would be a lambo.

that brand has always epitomized over-the-top, roid-raging, catch-me-if-you-can, look-at-my-scissor-doors rock star mentality to me. whereas i find ferraris to be fragile thoroughbreds, like a kite with an afterburner.

You do know the scissor doors on the Countach were notorious for falling down and cracking drivers and passengers on the head. "Hey baby why don't you have a seat." *Opens scissor door...BONK!!! Girl gets knocked out.*

That sounds more like a design plan rather than a design flaw B-)

I have no use for hot women, and I see alot more Hondas on the track than I do Ferraris. Don't get me wrong, I love watching Shumi do his thing, but ferrari could just do F1 and never make another street car and I'd be ok with that. Sure, ferrari's sound good...but so does a cammed-up Chevelle 454SS. Totally different sound, sure, but I'm not going to love a car for the way it sounds, and I'm certainly not going to pay 200k for one.

And engineering? Posh. I can appreciate GM making a phenominal world-beater in the Corvette for a bargain-basement price than I can an engineering team that knows they're making 100k cars.

Haha, I concur!

Well Lamborghini itself was the epitomy of the supercar throughout the 80's and 90's, after the Miura....they had the Countach, which wasn't all that fast for the price and was a pain to drive and park, and it wasn't reliable either, ...then came the Diablo which was all the Countach was and more, the reliability was improved, but the interior was of kit-car standards and it was a true devil to drive (Atleast before the 6.0 days) I guess in that way they are a true super car maker.

Today though, compare the Murc with any Ferrari and it seems cold and "spiritless", atleast to me. I'd still take one over most any current Ferrari, but it certainly does not have the same presence as a Ferrari, both in mind and reality

EDIT: Rex, aren't numbers matching, all original 454 SS's going for 200k these days? I look at these Barrett Jackson auctions and the price of muscle cars astounds me...maybe thats just Yenko Camaro's and GT500 Shelby's

Pssh. Shit's going for crazy at Barrett Jackson. And it was just an analogy...

Personally, I just think that Ferraris are incredibly overpriced for what they are. When it comes to cars-named-after-people I liked the Dino alot better than the Enzo.

I'm with you on the Ferrari. 8k for a clutch is insane. My neighbor down the street has a 308(granted not a "real" Ferrari), and it hasn't aged well. The rubber hoses in that thing makes an FD RX7 engine bay look like Mike's hatchcrap.

ha! the thing is, that doesn't sound out of place at all in a car named after the Italian slang word for "holy shit"

You know I feel much the same way about that kind of thing. Its easy to get performance when you don't really care about a cost target. Much more difficult to fit under the constraints of a cheaper car. I'm much more impressed by the Z06's performance than the F430's. Its really amazing to see what GM has done with the last 2 generations of Vette.

At the same time I really like to see what a blue sky engineering approach can produce. In the past its produced the 288 GTO, F40, and McLaren F1. For motorcycles this theme hasn't been visited very often save for the Britten V1000 and my all time favorite motorcycle the Honda NR750, the only vehicle to have oval pistons (I'll have to make a post about that bike btw).

Blue sky engineering is why I watch Formula 1 and Moto GP. Difference with Moto GP is that the racing is more exciting more of the time and the technical advances make it to the street much more quickly than they do in F1.

Rex doesn't like Ferrari's - end of discussion Tongue . It's his opinion anyway. If i had enough money i'd buy an F430, but i don't so i'll sit back, admire them and *hope* at the chance that i'll get to ride/drive in one in the future.

lol at standard MM discussion.

They look hot, but I couldn't say I'd want one. Something about it makes me both want it/and not want it. Sure i fI was offered one, I'd probably take it in a heartbeat, but I dunno how much I'd enjoy it. It would be like "hey, this is awesome, but if one little thing happens, i gotta fork over some major cash to fix it"
