I offered to get us some experienced car show judges down this past year ...and was told it would be handled by other people.
Ok, someone dropped the ball on that. Point for improvement taken.
KPWSerpiente Wrote:The show before this past one, I brought twenty DSMers in with me. Most of the club treated them as unwelcome guests at the after show cook out....so much so that not a single one of them wanted to return this past year.
Honestly Travis I was embarassed that it was even a question of whether your friends could eat at our cookout. That is one of the few times I've felt truly bad about the behavior of the club. One of things I've always loved about the club is that we've been welcoming and friendly and that was just not cool in the least.
KPWSerpiente Wrote:I said trifling RJ. Not cheap. Maybe use dictionary.com or something before getting your panties in a bunch.
Whether you said trifling or cheap, it was still derogatory in the context you used it.
Quote:Obviously the organizers did a good job this past year. Cars showed up, prizes were gathered and then distributed and everyone I know had a good time. And if everyone is perfectly content with it being basically just attended by those in the club then I'll stop pointing out the areas we can improve on to make it a bigger and better event.

I think everyone wants to make the show bigger and better but the devil is in the amount of effort and organization it takes to pull it off. I'm glad that people actually care about doing things better so hopefully people will put in the work to make it better.
Nobody is going to knock you for pointing out areas of improvement but in the future try not to start it out by making snipy insults. Believe me I know its frustrating to see something not happen when you specifically pointed it out but don't let that frustration turn into tearing down the people who put in a lot of hours for the club.

Our car show must be viewed as a progression. We TRY and do everything everyone wants- professional judges, prize money, trophies, attractions, etc. but only so much can happen each year. This past show focused more on getting entries than overall attractions. Why? Because the officers, members, and myself busted our asses the year before trying to get tons of things like a pocket bike demo, dealer stands, video game tent, food concessions, "exotic cars" etc. and lots of it fell through. I spent many hours dealing with JMU to have more exciting and "risky" demos like a mini pocket bike track they would demo at. JMU turned it all down. I even met with parking services, JMU police, and JMU risk management at the parking lot one day and they TOLD me where I could have everythign and what I could and could not do.
So thats why those type of things were not as prevalent this past year. Instead, I went to local car enthusiasts like Travis from Ultimate Audio and DJ from ET Motorsports. They told me car show entrants like to receive trophies- so they can show them off. I felt they would rather have prize money, but he changed my mind a bit. So we gave both- trophies and prize money (or gift certificates). We did a lot better this past year getting gift certificates. We actually made a decent profit, which wasn't even the plan.
Professional judges were not used because we had enough local help and their services were offered for free. We will help the local scene if it means building relationships.
I appreciate the constructive comments, so the current officers can continue to make this show bigger and better. Please don't sit there and bash what we've done. This show has only been around 4 years. Like it or hate it, it will continue and progress as time goes on.

I am personally volunteering to help organize this upcomming car show as well as howvere many we have while i am here at school, i will do everything possible, and would like to form a committe to discuss this. It is one of the major events we have a year, and i think we can definately improve. To me everything seemed a little last minute with the car show in previous years, however im sure that wasnt the case, being as i wasnt directly involved with the organization of the event. but i am volunteering my time starting now to make this car show as big as that CNU event.

Also, too late for this year...but perhaps a beginning of year/end of summer car show would be a good idea too, especially if we had enough returning members. This would be a really good way to recruit, seeing as how we cant really park a car at SON. Also, the townies and local people havent put their cars up for winter yet, and might be more likely to drive them out.

Hey, well this is my first post but i live in Newport News, and CNU is in NN. I never went to the show cuz i always had to work but every year from what ive heard the show has gotten better. I actually know some of the cars that are those pics. The dyno was a good way to get people to come i think thats why a lot of ppl went from what i remember hearing but they also had a lot of groups on judging.
If we worked out most of the details before school ended the spring before, there wouldnt need to be a whole lot of work left to do. Stage everything so that its pretty much ready to go..reservations made, flyers printed, parking lot set to be cleared, etc. Then when we get here, we set up the lot, pass out the flyers, advertise for like 2 weeks, make sure JMU still remembers we exist..done

true, we could set it up from the end of spring, but we have to remember people devote a ton of time at that point in the year to finals/graduation. also, vendors can lose paperwork over such a long span in the summer....we'd have to make sure to be in touch alot.

the last thing anyone would want to do is plan another show immediately following the spring one. there is so much last minute prep it would be hard to throw up together in 2 weeks. Planning for the spring show starts the day we get back from winter break.

its a good idea but the spring show is usually towards the end of April, which would make planning another show very difficult. Then May comes around and the officers and sick of car show talk and have other concerns like summer events, exams, graduating, etc.

The best way to do it is to have all your shit planned before xmas break, and then all you have to do is worry about lining up sponsors and trophies and shops to get in on it
