I'm not sure...why does everyone hate the 996? air cooling issues?
A buddy of mine who is a former race engineer with flying lizard racing said "even a beat up 996, is better than almost any other non-911 on the road"
But we will see...for now...the plans to build an indy car have been tabled. But depending on how the next year goes...I'd like to be in a true sports car...not a baby sports car (boxster, s2000, miata), not a 2dr sedan (330Ci, A4 Cab, Acura CL, CLK Benz), but a real drivers car.
What are my options? All I can think of is follows: 911
Any other options?

I love the 996. The only thing I dont like is the boxster bumper, which is pretty easily fixed with a GT3 bumper.
<blasphemy>I even like the headlights</blasphemy>
My problem with them is the chronic rear main seal issues.
I would be driving one right now if it were not for that.

Any other options? Interesting what you call a "true" sports car. By most definitions, a S2000 or even a miata is much more of a "true" sports car than an richguy sports cruiser.

seriously, the miata was the car that brought back the british tradition.
i love the boxster, and speaking of which....the new porsche cayman looks awesome if you have the bucks. the older porsches like the 968 are kinda exclusive and still look awesome (i have no idea about their reliability though). same with the 928 (mmmm V8)
and don't forget about once out-of-reach supercars like the NSX, which are now affordable.

996 is water cooled.
I dont like them because they're boring. They're ugly. The interior is bland. Its really not all that fast. It understeers like a FWD car on track, until you lift, then it oversteers like a FWD car. It really is a dumbed down, overweight version of a sports car, and their resale values are going down faster than maeng's mom on a friday night.
I can keep going, but you get the idea.

The 996 that I rode in for a weekend was amazing. Outrageous brakes, incredible grip (even with so-so tires), fantastic turn in and rotation, an interior better than any bmw Ive ever been in, and a great powerband.

no, regular carrera. it was a newer one though, not sure about what improvements have been made over the life of the 996

Hmmm...boring? 996 is boring? A dodge stratus is boring...the envy of all sports cars is definately not boring.
In my eyes, the car is not ugly. I'm a big fan of the 996 styling.
IDK...I think you guys are making an argument that is mostly subject to personal preferance.
From now on...I'll keep the 996/whatever I end up with comments to myself...and hopefully you'll be pleased with my next car when I get it.

I'd hardly call that over weight understeering pig the envy of anything. With a $70k price tag, it ought to evoke a bit more emotion and panache. Get a '73 RS

No one else has to be pleased with what you get.... its your car, you're paying for it, you're driving it.

this is what kills me. you're so caught up in image and how you' or your car is perceived. i don't know, maybe in that sense a porsche is the best car for you. anyone else ever been to a pca autox?
