Anyways yeah the place I am trying to work, the Army Enviromental Center, you get a 3 year appointment. They said GS-5 Step 3 starting, then GS-7 the second year, and GS-9 the third year! Got to find an apartment in the Aberdeen area though, and get a confirmation that I am really working there, lol.

I'll have to ask him. His big advantage was that he came in through a government scholarship. They paid for his school and in return he worked at DIA every summer. At the end he is committed to work for them for 4 years.

I think the shortage of qualified IT people in the government is what got him the big break to get such a huge promotion (7 to 13).

That young guy with a GS13 must be living nice. i know a coworker of mine that works for State is a 12 now and he's only been a full time employee for the government for 1.5 years. He worked as a GS5 coop for 2 years however, his former teacher is now his boss at State....and he's making a good amount of $$$.

what is SAS, a specific database writing program? or a company's custom software for using various databases, i just never heard of it.

SAS is a database software program used by the gov, and lots of others.
It stands for Statistical Analysis System, and it basically is different software programs integrated together to help with:
data management/entry
reports
stat/math analysis
bus planning and forcasting
etc etc
Obviously some of the difficulty invovled in learning SAS is in learning the SAS programing language, and how to manipulate the internal loops it uses in processing record by record to achieve whatever task you want.

i'm interested in economics and finance, i find it very interesting, if i had enough time/money i'd like to study that as well, aced my macro econ class, loved it. Instead i just read my mom's books (she's a budget officer).
