i think you've made the right decision by not buying this car. Whenever you sell it, it will be very hard to sell it because of the salvage title. Furthermore, the only insurance you'll be able to put on it will be liability, and it will probably be limited at that. Salvage titles are also quite risky usually, because it is very hard to tell what has been done and if the repair job is high quality.
Really and truly Reed, if I were you, I would sit down and make a list of cars you would like. I'd be more than happy to help you with this if you want (I'll be around all week next week, hit me up if you're in the burg). You need to define what it is you are looking for in a car and from there you can start making choices. However, impulse purchases, like the run-in today, will often lead you to being very unhappy for many reasons. Keep your money for now and you'll find something just right, but you need to set your parameters first. Hit me up and I'll be glad to help you out and give any pointers that I have picked up over the past few years (God knows, I've done enough looking for ways to spend money I don't have).

Yea when I bought my car I decided exactly what I wanted, and then looked for maybe 4 or 5 months before I actually found it. If you wanted to go 325 youd probably have to go 92-94 (if you wanted e36). You could probably get one with around 100k miles for like 6-7k. And they run forever, my cars liek a tank. (except for my wheels getting bent)

TIme is the key, don't rush in to things like Jack or RJ. I waited over a year for my hatch and I couldn't be happier... Well ok I'd be a lot happier if it didn't rattle like this bitch:

putting my 2 cents in...
I looked every day on the internet for about 6 months before I found the IV (grades suffered as a result, but I was hooked). I wouldn't trade this car for anything, except for a TT with fewer miles and the exact same mods. I kinda just walked into the III and regret it now. I should have evaluated everything more than I did. Once you set your mind, not necessarily on one car but on a few, it makes it a lot easier and you'll learn the intracacies of each and what to look for. Thus, you'll eventually find that ONE that is perfect. Just don't rush, or you'll wish you never bought it.

as ive tried to narrow it down, ive come to the conclusion that if i get another car its gonna be new, im just not willing to take the "risks" of a used car, unless i stumble across some amazing deal...

Hey! I waited with the damned baby blue 4 door civic for so long!!! I saved my money, and found exactly what I wanted. I just had to suffer at carmax for a couple months instead of searching the net for that same time... and there are very few cars that I would trade my car for. Nothing under $10,000... that's for damn sure, and my car cost me 1/5 of that.

The thing with used cars is you just have to be very thorough and rational in your decision making process. Buying a car (especially for guys like us) can be a very emotional experience sometimes so naturally sometimes we make snap decisions based on emotion. With new cars this means you'll get hosed on financing and such, with used cars you may end up getting hosed with a ragged out car. Really, if you use your head you'll be alright. I can see why you'd be hesitant about used but really its the way to go most of the time. Why absorb the first big hit in depreciation if you don't have to? The main things I think about with used stuff: -Find out what the known issues are for that car -Select a brand/car with good reliability from the start -Keep in mind repair/maintenance costs. -Determine how much time/money you'd have to spend on a fixxer upper (if that's what you want to do) -Where do you want to be with this car in 3-5 years (or more)? Plan accordingly. If you're not sure you're gonna want it in 3-5 then maybe you should skip it -Probably the most important criterion: what do you want to do with the car? Strictly street/daily driver? Autox + track? Drag? Eventual racecar? Of course these questions have a lot of follow up questions... All of this stuff may be elementary and you may have thought of it all before but when I was looking for the Geeser it took me several months to figure that stuff out.
