I would caution making the first "MM event" of the semester a motorsport-fraternity mixer. You'll get a big enough turnout as it is with just MMers, and you need to be able to devote a large chunk of your attention to the n00bies and engaging/making them feel welcome.
If you're having a Friday party or something, then definitely invite both groups and get everyone together. But for this, the first motorsports-club event of the semester, it needs to be motorsports-focused. Sorry, I just don't like the idea much.

I actually like the idea. But thats my opinion and I hate frats; but we have to start recruiting heavily.

uhhh, why don't you guys do a motorsport-sorority mixer? Or reach out to another club like the equestrian team or whatever.

Because the girls would scare all the car guys. :p
In all seriousness, I think mixer type events with any other group on campus is a pretty good idea, especially if there are any other clubs that might have somewhat related interests, a little socialization never hurt anyone, there are only so many episodes of top gear or cars to stare at.
However, I agree that it shouldn't be the first event of the season. Typically a fair number of people stop by that event after seeing us at Student Org night, and it should be focused more on explaining the club and what we do to make new members feel welcome, and weed out the kids that thing they're going to get to street race. There's always a bad egg or two.

last year we had a pretty damn good turnout for the parking deck/ klines meet- everyone can attest to filling the top level of the deck and having a line of cars down to the next level
As for a mixer, keep it separate. Please. Maybe figure something out such as parking deck meet and then a party/ mixer later on in the evening....but keep the first portion of the meeting/ first meet to MM members only. Newbies will see that we are a motorsports club and not a fraternity

Lies. You should be ashamed speaking such blasphemy.
I'm not working weekday nights this year so maybe I'll even get to attend one of these MM meeting thingys. I never even got to meet new members from last year because I had work for every event, and none of them came to the track events I was working

Semi-related, is ASP recognized by the university? I havent heard much about them.

ASP isn't yet. I'm actually one of the founding fathers. We're not like the typical "frat" and for anyone who knows me they'll believe that. A few car guys, snowboarders, and photographers. This wasn't going to be the first event of the year at all. That was just one that I had thought out. If we don't like it then we don't have to do it. I've convinced two guys from the fraternity to join MM this year... both Hondur guys. We'll talk it over with the execs. There are a few other guys that are interested as well from the fraternity. I think it is a great way to branch out, find new people, and socialize a little more.

Is it hard for us to set up our own autocross? Like can't we just roll down to verona's empty lot, put out some cones, lay down some chalk and just have MM funday and waste gas, shred our tires and smash our brakes so hard til the rotors crack and then wonder how the hell we're gonna get home Why won't this work?

^Yeah that's almost impossible. Would be awesome but that's why we team up with SCCA for our Solo.

We actually had an MM autocross on campus in the convo lot in the first full year of MM. We really shouldn't have because the convo lot has so many curbs to hit but point is it can be done.
If we were to do an MM autocross we would need NASA or SCCA to sanction the event for insurance/liability purposes. I don't know how much it would cost to rent Verona on a Sunday but I'm sure Ray Schumin could tell us.
It would be cool because it would be very close to campus and everyone could get out there in their own car but the cost could be the issue. If it's much more than about $1500 our time would be better spent doing a karting day at SPK in early fall (first or second week of September).

Orr...work with Ray Schumin for a "testntune" day and have early preregistration for MM only months in advance. If spots dont fill by the usual "open registration date" open up registration to the usual SCCA people.

G, do you remember what you guys had to go through to get approval/insurance/etc to do it on campus? was it a royal pain or not too bad?
The car club at RPI used to run autocross' on campus. Was open to the public, but then i think they had to limit it to students/alumni/faculty/staff for insurance reasons.
We worked with NASA and used their insurance to cover the event. Officially it was a NASA event so that helped with a lot.
I don't remember having to go through a lot of red tape at the time but I think that was partly because the JMU powers that be didn't necessarily understand what an autocross was very well.

So if a traditional autox can't happen at JMU, how about a human autox? CCVT is doing one at their upcoming show and it looks like a fun thing to try. Anything human powered - bike, skateboard, scooter, etc on an autox course. Could be a neat thing to have the next show.
