The X1 is actually pretty similar proportions as the Saabaru, only slightly taller.
The wife really wants an Audi, surprisingly. Then again, she does still talk about the S4 I had 10+ years ago. I told her the likelihood of us owning another depended largely on how far the Audi dealer was from our house. The good news is it's just over five miles.

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth

I saw the new S3 the other day... before I even knew it existed. Holy horny I want. Reminds me of my B5 S4.

For what it's worth, the X1 is basically an E90 wagon with a lift kit. It borrows heavily from the E90 and E82 1-series and apparently isn't awful to drive if you're one of those weird soccer moms who can't handle an actual wagon.
Otherwise just get the damn wagon.

I'd fully support you in an older Allroad. As a previous B5 S4 owner, i'm sure you're well versed in front clip removals, and probably have a box or 3 of 2.7t parts in the basement still. At least you'd know what you're getting into.
