Mike Wrote:can anybody tell me why they went back to theo at the start of this season? varlamov's wiki page didn't explain it at all. i missed last night's game since i'm in boston and apparently the celtics and red sox are more important to them. what happened?
They didn't really go back to Theo, as much as they left the #1 spot open and allowed both to play. Varlamov got injured early on and Theo without a doubt outperformed him the rest of the season. Starting him in this series was the right decision. Played average the first game, and then gave up a two goals on the first two shots in the second and was pulled. At this point I think you have to start Varly in Montreal, but honestly he didn't play out of his mind last game, and he has been very average pretty much this entire season. We'll see I suppose.

Schultz -2 Yup, probably the two worst defenseman thus far in the series for the Caps. No excuses made either, they both just aren't performing. Green's play on the last Habs goal (a 2 on 1) was absolutely atrocious. IIRC they were on the ice for 4 of the Habs 5 goals yesterday.
John Carlson on the other hand has been phenomenal. And then there is Backstrom
I guess the glass half full viewpoint on all of this is the Caps PP has been ice cold, they've gotten little to none secondary scoring, and their goaltending/defense has been subpar and yet they're still tied 1-1. Really if one or two of those comes around (and I would be shocked if they didn't) I still think they can win this series in 5 or 6 games. Although who knows, it wouldn't shock me to see otherwise.

They seemed to have found their scoring, at least for now, so that's the good news. If Caps can get 4 goals a game, they're going to take the series, because Montreal really doesn't score that much. They just need to make sure their defense doesn't give up more than they can score. I can't remember which it was, but the one where the Canadien skated around the entire net untouched while Schultz was fumbling over himself was pretty bad. Theo had a bad night, but I think Varlamov's goals were more due to the poor defense than anything.

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth
Very solid goaltending from Varly tonight. Secondary scoring finally came around.
I'll bet Semin has a big game in game 4. He's been trying hard to get on the scoresheet, and the last two periods he was flying. Just seems like he's due to have one of those games where he dominates.

I think Varlamov has always been the better goalie. He didn't seem quite right for a long time after the injury, but it's his job to lose now. If he plays like he did tonight, the Caps won't have any problems winning the next two rounds.

Varly looked great stopping some point blank scoring chances, Ill gladly eat my words about Theo being the bettter goalie if he keeps it up.
I agree, Semin is due a big game. He was awful tonight though, he didnt seem to be able to take a pass without fumbling it the whole night.
Varlamov kept them in the game until the offense could get on track. They're starting to look like the Caps that won the President's Trophy.

Man, he had a sequence of three glove saves in the second period over the two habs PP's, all of which were phenomenal.
This is where we'll see if the Caps learned anything from last year. If you want to do well in the coming rounds you need all the rest you can get, which means finishing off teams when you have the chance. They can't let this series go back to Montreal. That said, I think they'll end the series in DC on Friday.
LOL at the shit that price was doing at the end of the game. Talk about a mentally fragile goalie.

Yea well, they'll have all summer to think about it after tonight. In all seriousness it doesn't seem like a big deal...that kid is now the coolest kid in town and will any luck Ovie will send him a signed jersey or stick or something and it'll turn out to be the best thing that ever happened to him.

crybaby cary price hits backstrom from behind with his stick from the bench and they whine about ovechkin doing a hockey stop in front of some kid who is blocking the bench?
montreal fans are even worse than pittsburgh fans, Ive never seen hockey fans booo for a penalty every time someone on their team gets slightly touched.
Evan Wrote:they whine about ovechkin doing a hockey stop in front of some kid who is blocking the bench?
I agree it's stupid, but he was hardly blocking the bench.

It's apparently Ovie's routine when he isn't starting. Skate across, fly back and do a hockey stop, jump on the bench. If Bruce was standing there, he would have gotten sprayed.

Green - 1 pt in 6 games
Semin - 1 pt in 6 games
Flash - 1 pt in 6 games
Combine that with shaky goaltending for the majority of the series and you've got a recipe for a first round upset.
I still can't bring myself to believe they're going to blow it. But then again... :vomit:
