Official MM Firearms Thread
After doing some plinking with the boy over the summer, it became painfully obvious how hard it is for a kid to shoot a full sized rifle. I didn't even think about it, but his hand couldn't reach 3/4 of the way up the stock with the butt on his shoulder.

With his last single digit birthday coming up in a couple of months, I'm starting to look for a Cricket .22 or something for him. I like that they are single shot while he's still learning good mechanics and safety. Are there other similar ones to consider? If you comes across a used one, please let me know.

Hey Dave,

I've got one that was my brother's from when we were little.  Its officially Hannah's, but you are welcome to put some rounds through it to try it out.  Full Disclosure: I have no idea when it was last fired or cleaned, but its been taken care of just the same.

Sounds good. Just give me some heads up and I'll get it.  All my guns are with my brother at the moment since I don't have a safe place to store them currently.  But I can totally get it without trouble.

So after being to the range as well as friend's land a number of times, I've decided to purchase my first firearm. I enjoy the sport of shooting, and constant self-improvement needed for accuracy and control. To me, this is the main allure, as well as the social aspect of it.

I have no desire to conceal as I don't foresee living anywhere where this would be needed. So I am looking at a full-size 9mm, and have narrowed it down to many of the main competitors. I have my eye on the M9A3 right now as it seems they fixed a few small details, and as long as the grip isn't too narrow, would be a great pistol to start on and keep for a long time.

Any of you have experience with this or other double-single action pistols? It seems Beretta would be a great, smooth, and reliable gun to start on, but I'm not married to the idea.

People jizz all over Glocks and Sigs but I'm in love with my 9mm XDM. It's a little large to conceal with the extended mag, so I bought the XDS to carry.

But with the extended mag, I think it holds something absurd like 20+1 rounds. That was my first handgun and I'll probably keep it forever. Easy to shoot, adjustable grips, super accurate, easy to strip and clean, never failed to fire

One other thing, where are some good cheap places around Hburg or Leesburg to go shooting. I've been to SilverEagle and NRA but both are kinda pricey.

There are some free public grounds around Harrisonburg but they show closed from Jan 1st to May 1st. Anyone know why? Is that because of hunting?

there used to be a rifle and pistol range on the other side of the mountain when you make the 33 run.

And you didn't even think to call me. Tsk tsk.

I have a SIG P320 and CZ P01, you're welcome to shoot either.

In my humble opinion, which is also correct, the CZ75 does everything the Beretta 92 does, except better.

Might have to take you up on that offer. What are some good shops around here to lay them all out next to each other?

Also after seeing the drop test on the p320, I have no desire to ever own one haha

You mean the one that literally isn't an issue? Doesn't bother me. I guess it was possible to drop it at precisely the right angle and height, but it never happened in the wild and they've all had updates now, I wouldn't let it influence my choice.

My P01 is basically a slightly smaller cz75 with an aluminum frame. If you don't like it you won't like a '75, but I have yet to meet someone who really didn't like it.

As for shops, Shane stocks what sells which is Glocks and cheap stuff. The co-op probably has a big enough selection for you to get an idea though.

We could go on a lunch break and you could finger the lineup..

Posted this in the chat but gun guys can appreciate this. We had a range day today and I was pretty on fire all day. During the qualification course I was doing really good and was on my way to a perfect score, when, during the LAST course of fire, which is 4 rounds in 6 seconds at the 15 yard line, I yanked ONE round down and to the right. I was prepping the trigger on my way out and went to far and popped a round off halfway out to full extension. So pissed.

Well my 21st birthday present to myself was delivered.

Got an M9A1 from ArmsUnlimited (seemed to be the best price for a new example with 3 mags)
Picked up 1000rds of Winchester with ammo cans from SGammo (Where do you get your bulk ammo?)
Got some Walkers electronic ears, and generic eyes (Tried Decibullz but they didn't block much out)
Grabbed a Hks mag loader, cleaning kit, and Hoppes cleaner/oil/grease, as well as a SmartMat

Now I need to get some practice> I think most of the ranges around here are bring your own target but correct me if I'm wrong. If that's the case, then do y'all have any recommendations for target stands that are portable enough to fit in my car (Boxster)? I hope some ranges will have stands already but I want to be prepared.

Looks like the best bet is to join a club that will allow yearly access with a membership fee. Are any of you part of one of these clubs or have experience with them? Stonewall looks like they are full 24/7 because of the limited membership. I also found Glorious Twelfth, Shenandale Gun Club, Blue Ridge Shooters, and Hite Hollow.

My ideal situation would be to pay little to nothing to go use a range, so what are some options around here or in Northern VA? I'm used to paying like $30 an hour to use ranges in Loudoun which just seems ridiculous to me.

Hite Hollow is a bit of a trek, but it's $free.

One of the two that is only open May-Dec :/

I found a lot of clubs and ranges, but most are an hour out and have around a $300 yearly membership. Since I’ll probably go to the free park ranges in 2 months, I can’t justify a $300 yearly membership for that short of time. Guess I’ll have to suck it up and pay by the hour until then.

Let me know if any of you want to go out and shoot, I have lots to learn!
