The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth

So I've been wanting to get more into long range shooting for the past year or so. I've had a couple big caliber rifles here and there in the past, but I wanted to get something that would reach out to the 1000' mark. I've shot plenty at 400-500, but that just wasn't far enough. So I picked up a Ruger Precision Rife in 6.5 Creedmoor today. Not much gonna go on this gun except for a big optic and a bipod. Haven't made up my mind on optics yet, but I'm open to opinions!

Why'd you choose 6.5Creed? Can you elaborate on your logic behind the selection?

It was really between that and the .308, never really considered the .243. 6.5 has less bullet drop, less wind drift, overall just ballistically a better round, in my opinion. Match grade ammo is readily available, comprobably priced, and as I don't have a 308 already, I don't have a stockpile of ammo laying around. Seemed like a no-brainer to me.

In the 3 options (308, 65 Cr, and 6mm Cr) i'd go with the 6.5 Cr.

but if i were going to throw lead at a distance with a bolt gun i might have picked a different caliber all together... though i have a fascination with 6.5mm weapons.

Is there another caliber you would have picked that is comprobly priced? Obviously 30.06 is always a good one, or some of the Magnum rounds. I would have loved a .338 Lapua but my pockets aren't deep enough to shoot that.

I've always considered 300WM to be a good long range candidate, I'm not hating on 6.5Creed it's an excellent cartridge but like, what's it do that .260Rem doesn't? Or 7mm-08? It's still in its infancy a little bit, and I think it's artificially shorter than it ought to be.

Have we talked about kevlar? I can't seem to find anything in here. Interested on thoughts about owning it.

I've got 4 vests, 2 PACA and 2 Second Chance, along with various hard and soft armor plates up to Level IV. Most kevlar vests are cumbersome to wear, thick, and don't breath well. Once you've had them on for a few hours you get used to them, but they get sweaty in the summer time. If you plan to wear one, make sure you have a good Under Armour or other moisture wicking undershirt to wear under it; makes it much less uncomfortable. One thing I've done, and seen others do, is buy just a kevlar panel or ballistic panel, and either sew it or put it into a large back pocket on a hiking backpack or daypack. That way if things turn ugly for some reason you can just swing the backpack around to your front, draw your weapon and take care of business.

I've seen this same strat used for a Level IV plate, which fits nicely in a "laptop" sleeve; you just have to be semi-careful about dropping it.

I've heard of that too. You can get Kevlar patches or level IV plates in a variety of sizes for any number of uses. Put in a backpack or laptop bag, put a small one in the zip of pocket of your jacket over your heart; or, and God forbid it would ever be needed, put one underneath your baby's blanket while they are in a stroller. Keeps heat in and it's bullet resistant. In all honestly, anyone getting shot with Kevlar on may break a few ribs or get some serious bruising (a baby would be even worse), but thtey're likley to survive, which is what's important.

Honestly if I had the means I'd seriously consider it. "Here's a killer rifle and the training to work it." Seems like a really pretty reasonable price as well.

Didn't realize you actually get to keep the rifle.

If it was spring 2018, I'd seriously consider it.

Shit yeah. Blueprinted Rifle, rangefinder, and Leupold VX3 4.5-14, ReFactor reference armband...literally all the equipment you need to make a 1k yard cold bore shot. If I had fuck you money, I'd go.

All that said, you could probably do everything for a little less money than they are asking. But...this is the easy button.

Pyaww pyaww

So I keep getting letters in the mail about my Shield. Apparently my serial range had issues with the drop safety not re-engaging when the trigger resets after being fired. I have tested it several times in the past when I got these letters and mine seems to be fine, tested it again this weekend it is still works but it makes me kind of nervous. Should I be worried? I could send it back to S&W but I've shipped a gun back to the mfgr for warranty before and the process being a pain is an understatement. The other option is to trade it in on something else (this would be the second warranty issue I've had with this gun iirc) that doesn't potentially discharge when it gets dropped.
