thats weird, my STi which has the same engine, but more high strung recommends every 7500mi or 3750 under extreme conditions. i just do it every 5k miles cuz i dont track the car, but i also dont exactly scoot around town like a grandma. its also easy to remember to change it cuz i've gotten on the schedule of x5,000 and x0,000 mile oil changes. i'm at 49,400 right now, so i imagine i'll be changing it pretty soon.
i too dont understand how changing it too often is gonna drastically hurt the car, but its certainly not worse than changing it not often enough. although i think newer bmw's recommend synthetic every 15k miles according to their own manual.
i remember back in high school, one of my friend's dad worked at mobil HQ helping with chemical patent laws. apparently, mobil1 tested independently showed to hold up in engines well over 250,000 miles without showing any significant breakdown in lab tests, however the oil filters would need to be replaced every 20k miles.
now i know lab tests are different than everyday stop n' go traffic, but its still an impressive stat
