Like you said, it just depends on what's important to you
Not everyone can afford to live that close to their jobs. Fortunately, I'll most likely be working in an area where housing prices are lower than they are in Northern VA.
To put things in perspective, my partner lives in Harrisonburg. He bought a luxury townhome there, probably one of the nicest townhomes I've ever seen, for the amount that you paid "extra" for a closer commute and a finished basement. He only commutes about 25mins to work, up 81, with no traffic every day =P
This is just me, but I actually enjoy my time in the car every morning, even though I'm commuting a long distance. It gives me a chance to wake up and to listen to EITM to get my day rolling ^_^
