Why Sony is going to hell

They're going to sell a ton of PS3's in Japan for rediculous prices...

what is your reasoning?

You remember when the PS2 came out, Japanese people were going ape shit, camping out days in advance on the sidewalk. Sony's going to make tons of money when its released, atleast in the very substantial Japanese market

Eh but back then the PS2 had several things going for it that the PS3 will not. Number one, it was not 25-50% more expensive than the competition. The PS2 also came out before the XBox. The PS2 also had a few more exclusive first party titles that the PS3 won't have.

Remember Japan used to be overwhelmingly Nintendo land but Nintendo f-ed up with the Nintendo 64 (started believing their own hype, didn't pay heed to the competition...). Sony is in the same position now that Nintendo was in before the N64, except that Sony is charging A LOT more for their system.

Here's an appropriately arrogant quote (pride goeth before the fall):

"We have built up a certain brand equity over time since the launch of PlayStation in 1995 and PS2 in 2000 that the first five million are going to buy it [the PS3], whatever it is, even if it didn't have games." David Reeves, CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe.
